Topic: AT is about to lauch omni caps for the AT835 mics

I have been keeping a conversation with Chris from "Soundprofessionals", and he has told me that in a brief leadtime, Audio Technica is about to lauch the Omnidirectional caps for the AT835.

I guess this is a very good new.

Or he could mean the AT853? Wait a min, there are already omni caps for 853s already, I think.

There are white omni caps floating around with dealers from what I heard.  I also understand, from talking to a AT rep, that the old AT853RX caps will fit on the new AT853R Unipoint.  The new AT853R  has been improved to deal with radiowave interference.  They also tweaked the new Unipoint caps to 11mv sensitivity.  The old caps are 7 mv, but still rock IMHO.

AT is changing the line to "U853" models.  They have slightly different specs.  The freq response curves don't look quite as good, but the SNR is better (70dB instead of 67dB).  I guess time will tell how good they are.

So, does anyone know if the capsules/bodies are compatable?  Alot of us have got a significant investment () in AT853 gear.  Myself I've got something like ten various capsules and three different sets of mics!

Woah, you are so locked in... But I think the current AT853 gear is already good..why bother to upgrade?

The new UE-x capsules are compatable with the older unipoint series mics.  I read it somewhere on the AT site a week or so ago.  Don't know if the older capsules are compatable with the new bodies (don't remember them saying so, but the threads must match if the new capsules fit the old bodies). 

Also, there are probably omnis still available, but only white in color.  I doubt that the new UE-x capsules will be seen for $28 (like good ol' alpha s&l), so you might want to check on the 'older' omni capsules while they last (if they haven't sold out yet).  Discontinued doesn't necessarily equate to unavailable. Sorry, it was an error of writing.

This is what Chris told me when I asked him for omni caps for the CMC-4 (at853):

"AT will be coming out with omni heads for the 853's shortly and when they do, they will fit with no adapters"

Yes they are.  Just did a froogle search and came up with several results.  Looks like $198/mic is the best deal going.  Didn't check prices on capsules.

Yeah, I tried that also.  I see $185 a mic from B&H.
