Question on tracking
« on: May 08, 2006, 03:46:40 PM »
First time to post on here and didnt see another post about it (though I might have missed it).

I used to have a Gateway desktop that I used to track all my shows out with using Polderbits.

Last spring I bought a Toshiba laptop and used Polderbits and it worked fine. The problem is that after a while for some reason when I feed my MDR feed into the mic hole to record it to my laptop via Polderbits it comes out sounding like a really bad internet buffered feed. When you listen on the speakers as it goes in it is fine though. I downloaded a trial of Soundforge and same thing. Any ideas what could be causing this or how to fix it because I have about 7 shows I need to track out.

are you just going line in to the laptop?  are you using a dat?  or something else?  if dat you need some sort of digital soundcard or interface.

check your volume settings for the mic/line in maybe you're overloading the input?

you may want to look into a ua-1 or some other interface for transfering your Mini Discs - it should improve the quality of your transfers a lot for around $40 or so... http://cgi.ebay.com/Edirol-UA-1-EX-USB-Audio-Interface-UA1EX-Roland-UA-NR_W0QQitemZ7412907354QQcategoryZ41784QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

i would also suggest doing your tracking with CD Wave - its free and easy to use and no worries about SBEs

I do not think that it is the software. I ripped an internet streamed Damien Rice show and it sounds bloody perfect. When I listen to the stuff playing on my laptop as it records its wonderful. Both programs, same problem. Thinking it is something in the transfer maybe????

i bet your 'mic jack' is exactly that, a mic in.  you probably need to attenuate the signal down to line level.

OR, more optimally, get a real digital transfer mechanism going and don't rely on an analog cable between your two devices.

would this work for doing dat transfers. digital coax in, and usb out. or would it add an extra d/a, a/d step in there.
my shows on the archive: http://www.archive.org/bookmarks/halleyscomet8
And, yes, I know I suck about getting stuff circulated.  ;)

i remember reading that it is NOT bit perfect, as far as how much it alters a digital signal I do not know, my buddy used his for tranfering MDs and it worked great
