Schoeps..what caps to buy?
« on: May 02, 2007, 04:40:39 PM »
Recently bought Razorback's mk4>nbox+ rig

Ran it once in the field so far and i love it!
(MMW @ Grand Opera House Wilmington 4/28/07)

Can only afford one more set of caps and need advise.
I tape mostly from my seat at seated concerts,
but once in a while i go to GA shows and more
than once in a while go to bars and nightclubs.
Also do a few outdoor shows in the summer months.

I was thinking of getting the mk41's for the less than great
sounding rooms and the times where the seats aren't in the best spot.

While i'm asking.....i know some of you run mk4v's stealth instead of 4's
What's the difference in the sound?

Any opinions?

If you stealth and you can get close to the source run 21's.  Don't get 41's unless you see alot of shows in BIG venues, over 3000 people.

id get the mk41's in a heartbeat over the mk21's. i would think youd use the hypers more than the subs, but YMMV. which capsule would you use more?

mk4v's have a slight HF bump, which I DEFINITELY prefer over the mk4

At one point I owned the MK4's, MK21's and the MK41's. I found the MK41's to be the best all around capsules for taping anywhere from small bars, to outdoor bluegrass festivals, to Phish at MSG in the section. I liked them so much that I sold my entire rig and went with a pair of CCM41's. I found that the 41's sounded great even when close mic'd to the stacks. A lot of people will tell you that you shouldn't or can't use hypers up front, I found this to be the furthest from the truth. Wish I still had them.............

I'll go with this too.  Love the 21's, don't understand why more folks don't run them.  They own up front, hands down.

agreed! I run my hypers DFC/FOB to big festies outdoors far away from the section. one thing ive noticed is theyre def the MOST consistent capsule from the 480 line and they kick major ass :)

the mk21's can sound amazing, in the right location with the right setup

edit: reread the thread, realized you already own the mk4  :P

If it were me I'd most certainly go with the 41s.

If it were me I would do this. 21's can be sick but I think the combo of 4 & 41 would be more versatile than 4 & 21.

What's the difference in the sound?

mk4v cap (vertical) orientation makes it easier to conceal in a brim of a kangol while running near ORTF.  the mk4v has a rise in the 8-15khz which apparently helps to make speech more intellegible and has more even off axis response.

to be honest, if you think that the Schoeps sound is a bit dark, this cap overcomes the darkness with the rise in the higher frequencies.  if you tape a bit further back, this will be a benefit.

major drawback: the cap is almost 1000 a piece new.  used: seen them as low as a 1000 a pair, but only once in the past two years; I'd say you should expect to pay at least 1200 used for them now due the the price increase, if they ever show up.

email me if you interested in seeing a mount which will completely conceal caps and let you run near ORTF (95-110 degrees, center of the caps 16.5cm apart in a large cap).

one problem about stealthing the 4vs is the side address can get rotated and end up pointed up/down or even directly at your forehead if you don't have them secured properly.

Brian (freelunch), bless his soul, set me up with the most carefree mount that he uses with mk4s.  I just added my twist to it and came up with something that is nearly ORTF in terms of cap to cap distance and dead on for angle when used in conjunction with mk4v caps.  There is no rotational movement of the cap unless you are really tweaking it on purpose (the collette neck locks down with a nut/cable holder/star washer/washer/thumbscrew that is mounted on lexan).  That goes true for the angle between the caps, no movement under normal conditions.  If you are headbanging in the moshpit, then all bets are off.

Glad they're working well.   Have to agree that there is very little cap-shift anxiety with that method. But to give credit where credit is due, a taper who must remain nameless originally posted a pic of that setup using schoeps sgc clips.  That, and my cheapness, inspired the version with the inexpensive clips.  So I surely can't take credit for the original idea.
