TSKB: ATA array ? multiple hard drive bay ? anything ?
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:00:43 PM »
I got like 7 of these now, going on 10 , and hoping that there's a way to cheaply have all these active at once so i can do some cataloging, transferring between discs, etc.

doesn't have to be a pernament solution, but could be if price is reasonable (as in 200 give or take)

i've tried, with my limited tech speak, googling / newegging and can't seem to find something....

I've seen network hard drive enclosures for around $100.  They can generally hold 2 drives, and plug in via ethernet (presumably wireless too).  Personally, I have 3 drives: 2 ATA internal, and another in an external USB/firewire enclosure.  If I bought another one, I'd have no problem filling it up... but I don't want to chain ANOTHER enclosure :)

I posted this link this morning, connect 4 drives in a box... voila, instant aggregated storage. I haven't seen this thing in action though.

hi

there are appliances you can simply plug in and start up. they are self-managing and require no special knowledge to run.

here is a review of such an appliance (Tecus N4100): http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/09/19/thecus_n4100_brings_storage_space_to_your_lan/

there are lots of other vendors and types though. just make sure it protects your data by using some RAID configuration _and_ automatic backup (RAID does not protect you from fire, water, your own stupidity etc.).

regards
nicola
