Peluso, Josephson, Avantone, what's up????
« on: November 12, 2007, 11:46:19 PM »
Hi to all! ;D

I'm relatively new to the forum, but have been reading everything over the past couple of days.  There are some knowledgeable folks out there, thanks for the info!

I'm trying to expand my own activities as a composer and electronic musician and need a mic or two.  I will use it for a variety of purposes including recording recitals, sampling instruments, and taking live audio into my Motu828 and then into Ableton Live.

I've been advised and a few mics have grabbed me.  In terms of matched pairs, the Peluso CEMC6 and Jospehson C42 seem to be greatly admired, but they are also towards the top of my budget.   The Avantone CK7 could be used like this or the CK44 stereo mic could be a nice alternative, but there seems to be less known about this make of mic (although the rep from avan electronics was certainly encouraging).

Any advice out there?  Is it work an extra $300 (or in the case of the Josephson, much more) for mics that will not be specialized?  Also, is running these mics into my Motu828 less then ideal? (should I be thinking of buying some crazy pre-amp, also?) ???

Thanks in advance, speak to me mic gods!

Both the Peluso's and Josephson's will serve you well for your needs.  The Peluso's will be a more advantageous as you have multiple cap/pattern offerings with hypers, cards, sub or wide card, and omni's.  Not familiar with the avantone Mics.

The motu828 has OK pre's.  Nothing to write home about but definitly usable.

I wont disagree with any of the above...but if they suit your budget, no reason to fear Avantone...a bunch of us using the CK1 kits...i think at least one member has one of their stereo mics - Although the stereo models are a bit newer to the market...so - not as much info/recordings out there on them.

also, he could get the Avantone CK-1's and get Busman to modify them. EVERYTHING I have heard from Busman and his mods sounds GREAT to my ears. But if you are set on the full-bodied mics, then the Pelusos sound freakin AWESOME IMO!

The CK1's are TINY too. I would imagine that the Busman modded CK1's would sound GREAT. Pair them with your Motu and you have a decent rig for alot less than the Pelusos too!

Comb the Archive.org too and check out the sources there for the Pelusos and the Josephensens and the Avantone CK1's and see what catches your ears/eyes!

let me also add the Studio Projecs C4 to your short list of mics.
MUCH cheaper.
very satisfying performer.  You'd be happy as a clam.  and can always upgrade later on if you feel you need to.

at around...$125 the average going used price..., you cant go wrong.

$125? Never seen them that low! The $190 yard sale link you've posted is quite a steal for those mics.

Gotcha. But aren't they only sold in matched pairs?

i think you can buy a single, but that would be be more like $160+
that pair for $190 is just a screaming deal.  If I didnt just pony up for mics i'd be all over them

Thanks for all the great advice, that was really quick!

I'll certainly check out the studio projects those look great too.  What about Rode?  They've got a pair of nt5s that looks alright.

Finally, the ck7 is a multi pattern mic and that sounds useful, anyone using this mic?  (anyone know where i can get a couple?) :P

thanks again

Check out these two shows. These mics are on the same stand. I was running schoeps mk4 and my friend Mark was running the Avantone ck1. The Avantone mics sound very nice. As a neutral observer you would probably not realize the difference in the cost of the rigs.

The avantone source has been downloaded more b/c it is linked to a fan web site.

Actually, I have to say that the schoeps mk4s sound good, little more resonant.  I couldnt tell, but it may just be a little louder or compressed or something.  You got any more info about the set up??  Preamps, were they side by side, etc?

Thanks for the reply, appreciate the response, and yes, those avantones still look pretty great for the price.

Yeah, my schoeps rig, by all rights, should sound better. There's a huge price difference in the cost of the rigs. I was running cmc64(ortf)>v3>hdp2. Mark was running the avantones into a beachtek preamp. The mics were on the same stand. Mark did add some compression in post production which I do not use. For the money, the Avantones sound good.
