I'm looking for a tripod/ballhead setup that would support my D20/70-200 setup. Say around $300 budget. I'd prefer lightweight and short folded length to fit into a carry-on bag/backpack. I plan to use mostly for night photography, but do some hiking as well. I've heard the Bogen 055XPROB/322RC2 would be the best beginner setup. Any thoughts on that?

Another option I'm looking at is the Velbon El Carmagne 540. It's within the budget, is lightweight and packs small. Not sure about the reliability and how good the ball head is though.

This isn't an all in one solution by any means but the Gorillapods are awesome for hiking. They are really lightweight and flexible. Attach it to a tree, rock, etc. You'd probably want the SLR Zoom model. I've been able to get some really good compositions. I'd still be interested a lightweight full size tripod, but for now the Gorillapod has been awesome.

You might consider the Manfrotto 190xprob. It is lighter for hiking and has a smaller load capacity, but is slightly longer when folded. It is about $20 cheaper than the 055. Depends on what your photo priorities are.
Here are links to the specs.
