Title: Early 1970's Studio Microphone
Post by: ThePiedPiper on February 24, 2019, 07:03:46 AM
I need some help, and I know that this is VERY open ended, so I'm not looking for specifics (nor do I have any) ...

I have been asked to make some artwork for a recording from 1971. I would like to add a microphone or two to the artwork and I don't want to add a mic that was made in the mid 80's to a recording from 1971. So my question is, what were some popular / commonly used studio mics from that period?  Thanks for your help.

And before anyone asks, yes, I did use the Google'izer to look this up but I did not find any information that I felt comfortable with.

Neumann U47, U67, U87, AKG C12, RCA ribbons, etc. were all popular in N.A. studios. You will obviously need to include some other brands for different areas.

Do you think the prices in that ad are still good? I wouldn't mind having a few  ;D

I agree on the Sennheiser MD 421, and also her sister the MD 441, which I always thought was a very peak-space-age looking kind of mic. From a visual art standpoint, those two mics are icons of design in and of themselves.

In a similar vein, the old silver bodied AKG c414 EB also had that late 60s mod look.

Definitely see those MD421s hovering around the greats.

The old Shure 545 or whatever the predecessor to the SM57 was called, was also a staple and an icon.
