Post by: Tim on July 02, 2003, 06:35:41 PM
Okay so here I am with my nice u89 subcard Red Rocks panic tapes and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make WaveLab record!

So where is the little button that says record?

god I'm an idiot....

The star key on the number pad will work!  Don't feel bad, I did the same thing the first time I used it!

go to view>control bars and make sure you've got the transport control bar open on the screen.  then click on the round red button on the far right of the control bar (!).  it will open up the record dialog.  set your settings and click record or pause, then record.

if you have questions about settings, either PM me or something...i'll be around my PC part of the night and can walk you through the settings dialog...it takes a little tinkering sometimes.

good luck +t

They're pretty nice, I'm pleased. It was pretty calm on friday so that helped. I took the night off on Saturday which was the worst night wind wise. A friends 4v/tube/v3 tapes from that night are really windy. The sunday acoustic set is great. There was a brief hard rain in the second set, I haven't had a chance to listen too in depth yet but so far, so good.

Andy Campbell's schoeps 621->v3 from night one is good too. Depends on what you like, schoeps/v3 or u89/v2/minime... different flavors for sure!

I don't know about Jon But it has me. I can't wait to run 24 bit again at phish. The only way I'm not going to run the laptop is if it's raining. Which I really hope it's not. Our Panic shows sound sweet

yeah, been thinking about it. i just cant decide if i should go with a vxpocket or the nuendo multiset. i really dont see the need for the multi, especially at the $800 price variance. can wavelab  record more than 2 tracks at the same time? for example, can i feed it a 24bit spdif signal from my v3, and a 16bit signal from the sbd? can the nuendoset convert the sbd to digital and also feed the signal from my v3? dammit, why cant vx make a 24/96 card, what are my other options, anyone?, bueller?

Hi rabhan and All,

Wavelab only records two tracks at a time, but you can combine multiple tracks in the Montage section.    There is no need to only record them at 16-bit. However, if you want to take a 24-bit Wavelab recording, and then record a 16-bit DAT (from another source SBD or whatever), this too, is possible through the Montage. Still, this does no good for the idea of Multitrack recording.

The Multiset can definately take analog inputs and "convert them to digital."  For a more economic multitrack software, you may want to consider Cakewalk's SONAR 2.0.   I have used it to record two channels of mic input from the A/D>digital input on Multiset along with taking the analog outputs from a console into the analog inputs of the Multiset. Then, they should all be recorded as individual tracks to provide the highest uninterupted recording time possible.

I hope this helps.

Happy Recording,

Marc

thanks marc, i think i am gonna just go with the cheap 200 vxpocket for now until hdd-r's are on the market.\

now can i run xlr out from my v3 to my d8 as a backup if the laptop fails? will a simple L/R xlr > stereo mini work? will the v3 send levels too hot for the d8? line in or mic in?

Hi rabhan and All,

This may not be possible since the D8 gets bitchy when it sees levels that require setting the dial below 4.  Since the V3 is calibrated to +25dBu=0dBfs, it will be running quite hot to provide proper levels to the A/D.  These levels will still be +21dBfs coming out the unbalanced end of the xlr>stereo mini cable.

An M-1 or DA-P1 would be perfect for this task, but the D-8 may not be.

You may want to consider a pair of -15dB pads on the analog outputs of the V3.
While it could arguably impair the sound quality, it will assure you a decent backup.

Happy Recording,

Marc

Thats one thing I think the MiniMe has on the V3. Ability to run both off the MiniMe. 24/48 USB to laptop and 16 bit to the DAT. The DAT backup saved me at 7/11/03 WSP Cleveland.

They've pushed it back to around Christmas.  Here's a quote from Marc he just responded to an email on digital-panic about the same thing

Nutter said: "I just spoke with Sound Devices and they have no new news.  As already
mentioned, the release date is pushed back to "VERY late in the year" (ie.
December)."
