FR-2 Mods
« on: August 27, 2004, 04:31:57 PM »
Can someone give me the run down on the Oade mods availible. I am going to talk to Doug next week when I make another purchase, but I would like to hear what people have gone with so far and what they think.

I believe that he has several in mind.
Currently I think there is a T-Mod, or transparent mod and a W-Mod or warm mod.
These are taperssection-style mods that work best for our mics and our sound levels.

The warm mod simulates a tube type pre amp with euphonic second-order harmonics enriching the tonality.
This gives an excellent sound stage and helps with mics that are placed at a distance or are a wee bit thin.

The transparent mod gives sonic transparency, "quick transient response", lower noise floor and absolute minimal coloration.
This seemed best for me as I want to "hear my mics" and I reason that most PAs will have tubes or simulators up the chain.

As with mic selection, it is all a matter of taste and application.

Doug is the man to talk to, if you want details and facts.  I only can tell you what I have heard from last month.
Run this opinion by Doug and see if he agrees.

Hi!
We are offering both a Warm  MOD and  Transparent MOD. If you are
familiar with the Warm MOD UA5 or the TMOD UA5 you have an idea of how
each will sound. Of course, the FR-2 sounds much better ! The warm mod
give the FR2 a real analog type of sound that is tube like in nature
while the T mod is designed to produce the fastest, cleanest signal
possible without any coloration.  I did do a lot of work to the signal
path and to the P48 volts.I optimized the signal path for use by tapers
doing either FOB or section recordings with HQ mics, like the 480s.  The
phantom power supply post MOD is very clean. The +/- 7 volt rails used
by the analog circuits was already pretty clean and noise free so that
remains stock.  We are asking 1500.00 plus shipping for the FR-2 with
either MOD. The FR-2 does not include any recording media or an AC
supply, please keep that in mind. I bought several 5 gig Toshiba PCMCIA
cards for our FR-2 and 2 solid state compact flash cards for backup.
Changing from recording on one media slot to another is fast and easy to
do so I record with each slot filled.  I also worked out an analog MOD
to the output stage that adds 125.00 to the price of either the TMOD or
the WMOD. It results in a  very clean signal with a huge ,detailed
soundstage.
I hope this is the info you need and thanks !
Doug
