Topic: digital copy prohibited

I know my M1 is scms protected, and that unlike my D100, I can turn it off.
But I have never seen that warning displayed while I was taping, freezing me out of Tweedy's second encore last night. I was running out of my newly modded T+ UA5, and when I checked it, it had stopped. When I tried to restart, it would not start recording and displayed the subject line.
Did I push something on the M1 in some secret sequence and bring this on myself?

over 100 hits, and I get back a question? Now I'm gonna have to download the M1 manual (I bought mine used, from a ts member and without the instructions, as is alot of my gear) to find out how to turn it on or off. But I'm pretty sure it has the ability for scms to be active or not. If it didn't have it at all, I would be more than perplexed, as it did read "DIGITAL COPY PROTECTED" .
 The only help I got from search was a discussion of a D7(how long ago was that!) got that message in a daisy chain, and or the possibilityt of trying to feed it 24 bit. Neither was the case. Worked OK night before last, SX-M2 direct to M1. I didn't have another tape with me, but I should have at least tried unloading and reloading the tape.
 So, other than sending it to Paul, nobody has any advice?

Can you duplicate the problem?  -- I think you're not getting answers because folks have not seen this before.

If you can't duplicate the problem, it could simply be an anomoly with the tape, deck, etc.  . . . .

I've noticed a similar thing happen once with an old D-8 trying to take the optical feed out of a CD player.  I unplugged and shut down both the source deck and the D-8 and everything worked fine.  I could never duplicate the problem, but I did have to later repair the tray of that CD player.  I'm guessing it is probably some kind of corruption or error in the data stream being sent by your UA-5 that could not be recognized/processed by your M-1.

Were you using a virgin tape?

yeah, virgin tape.
 Haven't been able to duplicate the problem. Thanks to all who read and thought about it, whether you posted or not. The fact that this is unusual leads me to believe it is, indeed, an anomoly and one I hope to not encounter again.
