mini me question
« on: May 30, 2005, 06:18:22 PM »
i run my mini me into a dat (pcm-m1). 24/48 is the highest i can set the mini me and still get a signal to the dat. my question is: am i recording a 24/48 signal to the dat tape? i know that dat is normally 16/48 but i thought this was because of the limitations of the adc in the unit, not the dat tape itself. i hope this isn't too confusing.

DAT is a 16 bit device, it is taking the 24 bit feed you are giving it and dropping whatever bits are necessary to get to 16 bit

those bits are being truncated, i would def not try this
Schoeps MK 4V & MK 41V ->
Schoeps 250|0 KCY's (x2) ->
Naiant +60v|Low Noise PFA's (x2) ->
DarkTrain Right Angle Stubby XLR's (x3) ->
Sound Devices MixPre-6 & MixPre-3

Higher resolution is generally better, just gotta understand how the MMe is laid out.  The mini-me always converts @ 24 bit.  However; when you set the front panel to 24/?? it's not going through it's dithering algorithm(uv22hr) like it would if it were set to 16/??. Thus sending a 24 bit signal to your DAT deck, which it can't handle & consequentially truncates(drops) the least signifigant 8 bits.  You'll need a 24bit recorder(laptop,sd722,fr-2 etc) to take advantage of recording true 24 bit material.  Hope that helps a bit.
