Another Nak thread :really_sucks:
Been searching around, and I haven't seen this addressed anywhere. Ran my old Nak 300's a few time with regular XLR cables into a two XLR>1/8" male cable into channels 3-4 on the DR60. Levels were so low it wasn't funny.
Picked up some new 300's in the YS and I'm going to run them with the DR70. This got me thinking: the original cable that came with these terminates into a 1/4' phone plug, which I believe that the DR70 will also accept. I know they originally came with this connector because they were designed to plug into a mixer or tape deck, but is there any advantage to running a cable like this into a modern recorder? Balanced vs. unbalanced or anything like that? Any insight is appreciated.

I use a set of the original Nak CM series XLR>1/4 cables plugged into channels 1 & 2 on both my DR-70 and DR-60D all the time and have had no issues.

I get a signal that's plenty strong using the XLR>1/4 OEM cables and typically run those channels on the recorders Low Input setting, but I have not really done any comparison with running straight XLRs.

Thanks Billydee. Now I need to decide if I should run the shotguns. Old movie theater that holds about 1000 (which includes an expansion off to the side). I would be far enough back that I'm stack taping, but always had good results just using cards

Make sure the NAK 300 built-in attenuator isn't engaged...that might explain your low levels.
Most of us have run the 300s with balanced cables forever with no issues...I run the TEAC ME-120s with the DR-70D to good effect.

Yeah, the attenuators are off. Also a 6db difference between the two, and it's not the caps, something about the bodies. I figure they are going to be good candidates for the chop and mod one of these days. I wonder if my low level issue is related to the XLR>1/8" cable....although I use it for board patches all the time.
Anyone know of a good place for a good test and tune up? I know about Sank, anyone else?
