Im interested in your opinions about a cheap pair of active speakers (450 tops), what would you take if you would need a pair?
More intended for playback, not monitoring; good sounding and XLR plugs are a must...

Looks good...
Anyone used these?

Or the Adam A5-s? The a7-s are a bit out of my league...

My next pair will be the Adam A7's...they sound FANTASTIC.
I have never hear the A5's, but I'd imagine they sound nice as well.

I've always wondered about these:

I know a number of folks who have the blue sky setup and are quite happy with them...

Would these work nicely for just plain music listening or are they really only ideal for monitoring/mixing? I'm looking for a sort of dual purpose set of speakers which I can use with my macbook at my workstation for day to day music listening and also to master my recordings... any thoughts?

I like Paradigm speakers. Something like the small "Titan" bookshelf model sound pretty good. Just run off an old school receiver. Probably not as detailed as studio monitors, but a nice compromise, and that's what you're mixing for in the end anyway.
