Title: anything new in the HDMI world I need to be aware of?
Post by: leehookem on December 04, 2013, 11:05:16 AM
Just bought a new TV (http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeEntertainment/LCDTV/Models/LC60LE857U.aspx) (delivery next week), and a new AVR (http://usa.denon.com/us/product/pages/productdetail.aspx?catid=avreceivers%28denonna%29&pid=avrX2000%28denonna%29).  Not sure which version HDMI cables I currently have.  I bought them from Monoprice about three years ago.  Just wondering if there is any new technology I need to be aware of.

The newer HDMI standards increase the potential capabilities of the devices, but the cables remain the same.  Your existing cables should work fine.  I wouldn't expect any problems unless they are super long.

There was a big push when 3D came out that you needed HDMI 1.4 to do 3D. This is true, but "1.4" is a connection spec, not a cable spec. Any high-speed HDMI cable can transmit 3D.

Yes, there are active HDMI cables now which are directional. I have a good friend that recently renovated his home and the cables were installed in the wrong direction. whoops!
