Title: Schoeps MK41V Series Caps
Post by: Datfly on August 14, 2015, 10:28:05 AM

Just wondering what the advantage is for the MK41V caps over the MK41 caps.
I understand for undercover it may prove to be helpful but I see several
stand tapers have switched to them and was just curious as to why.

IMO, the mk41 is a better supercard cap for ambient recording.  It has better side/rear rejection and a more neutral sound and better HF extension.  I believe the mk41v has a very slight HF bump compared to the mk41, but its not as significant as the mk4v/mk4.  The mk41v is easier to use undercover, so for that application it has superior form, but inferior function.

That said, they both sound great and I'd love to own either.

^^My opinion is that people are jumping on them because they've come down in price recently.  And at least in taping circles, the 41V is fairly rare.....  so tapers are eating them up if possible.  As far as sound goes...  I bet it would be pretty difficult to tell the difference in an A/B comparison.
A local buddy of mine has had a pair for 10years or so, and I've ran his 41V's a few times and have heard many recordings with them...  and I've run standard 41's probably 100times....    I've never A/B'd them, but I'd be shocked if I could tell a difference in sound.
YMMV.

I have to double check but I thought only the MK4V had the HF Bump but the MY41V is the same as the MK41 just vertical.

no HF bump on the mk41v, that's the 4v.

I like the V capsules because I find it easier to mount them.

I don't really see the advantage to the 41V's then!!  I thought they had a bump, which was why folks are switching over.

I went to 41V because the use of various kwon bars for "patterns" annoys me and it's simpler and better to use the vert bar PAS for pretty much anything I'd do with a MK41.

Sound-wise it's a little hard to compare since my 41Vs are new and my 41s were "burned in" from about a decade of use before I got them IIRC.

I see no real reason to buy one over the other for sound; it's really more about the form factor. With the price drop, the 41V form factor, which I found advantageous, made it a better choice for me.

What did they used to cost compared to now?  Is it because the dollar is stronger relative to the Euro?

There were two factors:

1) The relative weakness of the Euro against the Dollar

2) Schoeps revised the pricing scheme for the vertical capsules more generally. The mk4v and mk41v used to cost significantly more than their non "v" versions.
