If I'm going to a rock show, using new batteries, mic plugged into the mic in spot,is a preamp nessercary?(i have a church audio ugly 2) the preamp just powers the mics,right?.. so if the recording levels are good without a preamp there shouldnt be any distortion, right? Just trying to figure if I really need to sneak in the preamp as well as the recorder/mics...I finally am sort of happy how im clipping the mics,so my next show will hopefully be using the mics I bought almost a year ago..thanks for any and all opinions..scott

If I'm going to a rock show,
Rock show = use a pre-amp
Your recorder's PIP is likely 5V or less (3V on many)
You MIGHT be okay depending on the volume of the show, but why take the risk when the Ugly 2 is so small?

Not always correct. It's more likely to occur with a board feed but you can certainly have low levels with major distortion.
I would just use the pre. You'll regret not using it when you have a distorted recording. If the ugly pre II is too bulky for your purpose I recommend a UBB.

Thanks for the responses..well I bought the ugly 2 so I might as well use it..line in input, prob set for 10 or 15 gain then adjust recording level on the m10

I run my 9200 at 15 gain and my M10 at 4 or so...and tape loud shows.

If you can't sneak a small recorder + a ugly into a rock show you need to work on your technique! ...I'm not a big guy and I have no issues getting my Tinybox + M10 into shows.
PM me if you need any help. I have family in town, so I might not respond right away...but I'm happy to help with some tips. I don't post tips into threads since some people here are sensitive about sharing techniques.

So? What has changed? Nothing. Sneak in the amp or battery box as well and you are ready for taping.
If you have no problems getting in the gear, I don't really understand why you would want to tape without a pre or battery box to be honest.

I have run ca-11 cards>r09 mic in for arena shows like Radiohead & Roger Waters without any problems.
