Title: Re: windscreen options
Post by: dactylus on August 08, 2007, 08:42:22 AM

Are there any "Heavy Duty Windscreens" similar to the Shure A81WS that will fit mics with a 1 inch diameter?  The "heavy duty" Shure A81WS looks like the ticket for me BUT I need a larger version that will fit a 1 inch diameter microphone...  The A81WS is a little too tigh fitting for my gefell mv692/m94's...  Any suggestions for less than $75 for a pair?

Thanks!

Thank you   +T    :)

Besides the 1" diameter requirement I need the "EXTRA PROTECTION" of the Shure  A81WS "Heavy Duty Windscreens" for very windy conditions.  I will call Windtech to see if the Ultra Series provides extra wind protection above and beyond the standard models.

thank you very much for the link,

David

The Windtech Ultra Series does provide HEAVY DUTY wind protection!!  The owner, Craig Olsen, is also a very cool audio person that describes himself as a "mic slut".   Who else would you rather have designing, producing and selling audio products?   ;D

Check them out for your windscreen needs!!!

ULTRA heavy duty? Try this one:

It'll give you some serious wind protection (I know I have one).

If money was no object (Details: Weight 3.00 lbs Price: $660.00) this looks to be the ticket.

So would that be $1,320 to protect a pair  of mics?

yes, although to be honest with you, I don't think I've ever seen anybody using these in pairs. Dave from MicSupply ran a shotgun in one during the first Austin City Limits a few years back (when open taping was still allowed). Usually these are used with shotguns and used on boom poles.  There are some other options though, check out the K-Tek series :

I own one of these too, and while not nearly as nice as the Rycote, they are half the price and since you're not putting these on a boom pole, you don't have to worry about hand noise.

I just got a pair of Shure A81WS for my Peluso's. I have a question though, I was sticking my finger in the hole of the wind screen and felt a rough scratchy material at the very end. Do I stick the mic in as far as it can go or do I just go in far enough to cover the cap? maybe to the dB switch? I'm just afraid that if I put the mic in all the way that scratchy material may rub on the mic end and that noise may transfer to the recording.

Any comments or suggestions?

I haven't taken an A81WS apart but that material feels the same as the material a DPA0896 is made from. I usually insert my mics all the way, then back them out about a quarter inch so ther is a very small volume of "dead air" immediately in front of the capsule. Does it help improve or is it detrimental to the sound, don't know, but it does offer a little peace of mind.
