Sounds good, Ashley!  You might want to FLAC your sample files, makes for a lot faster download.

Thanks! I flac'ed everything, but thought I would upload a wav file for some reason. No need, I guess, since Winamp and other programs play flac.

Here's the show! The beginning sounds a little funny, but it clears up pretty quick.

Thanks Ashley!  Recording sounds great.  Might have to pick up the DR07 so I can compare to the DR-1.  DR07 has a nice warm sound like the DR-1.

Comparison of the 1 and the 7 at NAMM.  Looks like the 7 is a stripped down 1, which is fine, cuz I don't need all the extras that comes with the 1.

Anyone have the guts to open this (or the older DR-01) up?  I'd like to see the guts!

I'm guessing it is a "one chip" solution like the original Edirol R09.  I may get one and try it out, but maybe someone else is curious too.

Thanks,
  Richard

I am very satisfied and am having a lot of fun! All my equipment is so small I just keep it in a make-up bag, throw it in my purse, and set up in a couple of minutes. It's great! And it sounds way better than I ever expected!

I can't seem to figure out anything about the built-in mics. I'm interested in this unit as a backup analog line-in and stealth device, but also in situations where I just want a simple, small all-in-one device for ambient. I use 480s > R44 for more serious recordings. Anyway, I was wondering if the built in mics were omnis or cards. Given their layout, I'm guessing omnis. Can't really figure it out from the spec sheets though. I've been thinking about an LS-10, but this is looking pretty nice and may not have the low pass problems, and for this kind of thing (for me personally at least), I'd prefer omnis.

Anyone actually know?

Nice job! I wasn't familiar with Mofro, but I'm liking what I hear - both from the musical and sound quality standpoints. Good bass punch!

The bass rolloff in the LS-10 can be EQ'ed out well enough. I constructed an EQ curve in Audacity based on the graph in this post, and apply it to the recording as my second-to-last processing step, before the normalization pass. I haven't noticed any unwanted noise in my classical recordings from doing this.

However, the LS-10 mics are cards... which suit my purposes, at least. Still, the DR-7 looks very interesting in its own right - especially in light of my difficulties with the LCD-induced hum when I use external mics on the LS-10 and the LCD is pointing at my body.

Well, they tour like maniacs. You should see their tour archive on that site. Just hang tight. They'll be back in your area some time. JJ is gonna take a small break this spring, but I'm sure they'll be back on the road in no time. They're my favorite band -- can't get enough. And nice guys, too. Last summer they did a lot of festivals, so you might see them doing that again. And JJ always has a new album in his head, so look for more good stuff to come.

What battery supply do you use with those? I just got the dr07/sp-bmc-2 combo.

i use the church audio 9100 preamp, but from what i understand, unless your recording something REALLY loud, you should be able to use plugin power from the recorder just fine.

that being said, the CA9100 preamp is a great box, and well worth the money/wait to get one.

The DR-07 has built in power for external mics. If you record using the internal mics, you select "Power: Off" in the menu. When plugging in the externals, you select "Power: On". It has worked beautifully for my recordings (loud shows!). I can record at least 3.5 hrs of music with one set of AA batteries, and with the mic power on.

I have not yet recorded anything with the internal mics. I'll post something if and when I do. See this thread (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,115981.msg1566949.html#msg1566949 -- 9th post down) for a sample of a  >:D recording.

If I can post this here, I used the new DR07 last week at a club show by local [Brisbane Australia] band Del Toro.  It was sitting on the front of the sound desk and using the internal mic.  I also stood next to it and recorded the set with my old rig of Sound Pro Binaurals, Sound Pro Pre-Amp and Minidisc[MZ-NH600].  Sample mp3s of a song are hosted on Box.net here

http://www.box.net/shared/96zzmpdqu5

I was pleasantly surprised at the ability of the internal mics.

Next I'll try the binaurals as mic-in.  I used the DR07 at a festival last weekend with the Binaural/pre-amp into Line-In and had mixed results.  When I use the MD with them I just set the Gain Switch to 0db and the output level control to max and the system takes care of loud for me.  With the DR07 that worked for really loud material [eg Mogwai] but to get any reasonable signal for not quite so loud stuff i had to set the Gain to the Low setting [22db] and play with the output level control.  This worked fine for acoustic and moderately loud stuff but there was still some clipping on some recordings..  May take a whole to work out how best to use it but I'm happy enough to carry 2 spare 8GB sd cards instead of 20 Minidiscs.

The sound coming from the DR07 seems pretty good for such a small recorder. I noticed that you also included a sample MiniDisc recording of the same band. The MD seems to have a slight edge in treble response over the DR07. Yet the DR07 sounds much more lifelike.

Having just bought a Marantz PMD620, I'm looking forward to the day when I can pick up a set of binaural mics and a preamp and see how it does recording live shows.

I ran the DR-07 for the very first time on Monday night, and I must say going line-in, the unit sure can take in a hot signal. I hit record, maxed the recording level, and the peak was never reached once. I did a post processing of a +10dB amplification though...even though it is unnecessary.

Does this mean I should go in through "Mic In" with low gain in the future?

that was my experience too with Sound Pro Binaurals -> Sound Pro pre-amp> - line in.  i haven't tried mic in yet because the internal mics seem to work so well.

I did a few tests of the line in levels of the DR-07 vs Edirol R-09HR. Not extremely scientific, but should work on an approximate scale:

Edirol R-09HRTascam DR-07
103.75
305
406.25
508
609
70 (levels at 0dB)10 (levels at -5dB)

So it seems that the DR-07 should be able to handle a hot signal... I still wouldn't go mic-in though, depends on your other equipment, I suppose.
