Dead Ratting a Hat Rig
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:32:46 PM »
Not enough space for a full dead rat, but need to add wind protection to the inside of a hat.  Cloth?  Thin foam?  Thin Cardboard?

PM Me if this is too sensitive of a topic.

Three words - fur pimp hat.
An instrument that converts sound waves into an electric current >
an electronic amplifier which precedes another amplifier to prepare an electronic signal for further amplification or processing >
a device to capture an analog or digital source and store the encoded data in a digital format.

you could cover them with a pair of these mic furs and run inside the hat.

It's windy inside your hat?
That's mind blowing.

Without going into a lot of detail, its a fairly porous head gear, and the sound I get is more like cavitation in quiet parts, rather than full on wind noise.  Actually, a frigging cocktail napkin did a pretty good job for the 2nd set.

I would have thin and thick foam interchangable for really windy vs calmer days

LOL

I've used thin Neumann windscreens in a hat with no problems.  If you need beefier wind protection, take a piece of (acoustically transparent) speaker fabric and put it tight over the cap before putting the windscreen on over it.

You missed the funniest part of Gutbuckets post...IT'S MIND BLOWING!!!   ;D :coolguy:

I wouldn't use foam at all inside a hat...just get some fur or use the tip of a dark sock (1 or 2 layers) and collapse it around the mics and fasten with a rubber band...won't take up any extra space.  Since it's hidden, looks don't matter.

^^ If your hatband isn't leather, you could probably safety pin the socks to the hatband to help keep the mics from slipping around up on your head.

Get a small and dark stuffed animal and cut off the hands... I know kinda morbid  :'(
Use dark bread ties to secure them to the cables. Works for me... nuff said.

The solution was, Reticular Foam, in 1/4 inch thicknesses (same stuff for speaker covers), lining the hat (what a PITA), and similar multiple layers of that foam covering the caps.  This was a sewing project, for which I was not well suited, buts its done.
