microphone caps

With my Busman BSC1 I've been using the hypercardioid caps that came on the mics.  When might I want to use the cardioid or omnidirectional caps?
Mics: Neumann KM184 & Busman BSC1
Recorders: Sound Devices MixPre-3 & MixPre-6

Omni's on stage and cards in a good sounding room close to stage, hypers for everything else.
