Superlux HM-32 any owns these shockmounts?
« on: November 21, 2004, 09:47:15 AM »
Superlux  (http://www.superlux.us/smalldiaphragm.html)

HM-30 | elastic sleeve instead of bands
HM-32 | elastic bands instead of sleeve, offers greater isolation than above

Cheap...$6 per!

At this price I'm wondering if they hold sm57's, beta 57's and mics like that well. At this rate I feel like I should buy a bunch for my multitracking rig. Just for the hell of it!

Actually, anyone put nice mics in these? Trust them with Neumann, Earthworks, or others?

I got a pair with the SMK-H8Ks that I started out with. When I sold those, I bought a pair of HM32s to run with AKG 300s. Now I'm using them with my 460s. They are probably the lowest profile around, very lightweight,  and seem to do a good job of isolating the mic. Some people on this board have experienced loosening of the thumb screw that keeps them in position over time, but I haven't had this problem yet. Personally I think these kick ass. If they were made of metal instead of plastic, they would be more durable, but at $6, they are easily replaced.

I just got this email in minutes from asking the owner...

Quote
I don't think the HM-32 would be great for a mic with a tapered body like a SM57 or SM58.  While you might get at least the narrow end of the mic into the shock mount, the mic would want to work its way out of the mount due to the taper of the mic body.

I would have no problem using these mounts for mics like a Neumann KM 184, Earthworks M30, or Schoeps Colette series.  My only caution would be that the rubber bands eventually break so I would not use one of these mounts to hold a mic in an inaccessible place.  Also taking reasonable care when inserting the mic will prolong the life of the bands.  Each mount does come with spare bands, and I have extra replacement bands available.

As to the price, I am probably not making enough on them to pay for my time packing and shipping, but I decided to do this in part to bring folk to my site hoping they will also consider the mics I sell :>)

Thanks for your interest!

Are those a solid plastic tube with the bands on each end? Hard to tell from the pics. How much spacing end to end?

Might be a little more low-pro than the sabra soms for fob/onstage

These are about 2.5" long by about 1.5" diameter plastic tubes like you say. The schoeps mounts may be a bit smaller, but they are very low pro. Here's a pic.

I think I'll be picking these up for my akg 391's too. These are 3/8" mounts right? If so I'd have to get adapters for my vert bar.

great shocks, they come with adapters in them.  after a year of heavy (i mean heavy as in at least once a week) taping, they were still going strong, but no where near new quality.  i replaced them with new ones, for $6 its a good buy.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

I love these shockmounts...had never found any reason to upgrade to more expensive ones.   They are relatively low profile when combined with my black homemade vertical bar.   Never heard any bumps/thumps/shocks on my recordings except the very first time I used them because I didn't secure it with tape to keep the cables from sagging.    The only thing is I've had to replace one of them due to the threads wearing out but now I just leave the adapters in to connect to 3/8" and those are metal so less likely to wear out than the plastic.
