ISO: Clarity, your suggestions will help
« on: November 23, 2004, 06:49:31 PM »
I really like clarity in my tapes.  I have LD, TLs, but am looking for new mics.  I run V2>MME (happy with this combo).  I also have some MBHO, but I have never run these.  (don't ask).  Heres how I want it to sound.
Clear.
I really like highs.  I like the chop of a mandolin
The mids i don't care about.  Maybe cause I haven't heard good mids.
And on the bass end, I want it to be sharp.  For example the sound of fingers on an upright is awesome.
I just want clarity.  Please help

yeah, based on that description I think the MBHO's will be perfect for you.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

Wow - for me...clarity is ALL about the midrange...I only like enough high end for detail...exagerated high-end always sounds phony and small....like a miniature cymbal...

Go for transparency and a stong midrange...

I never liked the sound of Japanese mid-fi (playback) gear...always liked that "British" sound...McIntosh...

Yeah, from your description I'd say use the MBHOs.  And sell your V2>MMe combo and get a V3.  I find the V3 to have a much tighter low end than the MMe -- very taut, but not as full sounding.  Matter of taste, but if you're looking for clarity above all, I'd say you'd be happier with a V3 than a minime.

If you don't want to use the MBHOs, think about AKG 480s or neumanns.  Stay away from schoeps and LD mics in general.  TLs are pretty tight sounding, but you wouldn't want U89s.  If you really want to go for clarity and a real soundboard-sound, look into earthworks mics.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro

I def don't want that brittle, highs.  I just did a soundboard matrix, and the soundboard feed just makes me shudder at times.  Maybe I have been overlooking mids, and attributing them to highs.  Hmmmm.  *One day I will be happy)

Just whack a cymbal sometime...they make a more bell-like "ding"...Compare that to the sizzly "tsst tsst tsst" that you get from some mics...
