TLs -> ??? -> Mod SBM-1 -> NJB3
« on: February 24, 2005, 10:58:53 AM »
Greetings friends and fellow tapers... I am looking for some opinions for what y'all would put where the question marks are here.  The Mod SBM-1 is quite warm already, with the 4061's.  Not sure that I want anything that would add much warmth...

The other obvious possibility is to take the SBM-1 out of the open rig, and use a W/P/T mod UA-5, or a V3 or something... I had a Wmod UA-5, and I dug it, but I kinda want to try something else...

Obviously would like to keep it as cheap as possibile, but not too concerned about budget at this point, cause I'm gonna have to save up...

word thanks

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I love the V2 > Mod SBM-1 sound, and with the TLs I bet it would be nice

I only had the TLs for a short time, but ended up running them with all 3 of the combos suggested (MP2>(mod)SBM1, V2>(mod)SBM1, and straight V3). Definitely go V2>(mod)SBM1.The Dickey Betts I pulled with that rig last year smokes damn near every other tape I've ever pulled period. I would've kept the TLs in a heartbeat were it not for their size based on that show alone.

I'd be glad to send you a copy to check out. I would torrent it, but Dickey has the same online policy as the ABB.

Can't go wrong iwth the V2>ModSBM-1 combo. I also made many good tapes with that setup. In the end, though, I thought that the SBM-1 was a bit too warm for me...plus, I got sick of that Hosa Box and such. But yeah...V2 all the way!

I just sold my V3... waiting on 722..

Currently borrowing my buddies MP2 > Mod SBM

Personally I do not like the bass roll off of the MP2 nearly as much as one from Grace.  Simply not as crip IMO.

Thoughts from both sides...

the Mod SBM-1 I have really reminds me of the W-Mod UA-5 I had... which makes sense cause they are both W-Mods...  Problem with really singling out how it sounds is that I haven't run it with the TL's yet, cause I don't have anything to power them.  But the DPA's tend to be very transparent, so my feeling is that it is quite warm.

I know there are a number of people that are running it behind a 148 - that seems like it would be EXTEREMELY warm...

V2!!!    I ran the TLs with:

V2-> SBM-1
V3
M248->SBM-1

My favorite combo was the TL-> V2 -> SBM-1.  I found the V3 a touch bright for my taste with the TLs and wasn't a fan of the 248.   The SBM-1 is pretty warm (analogish) sounding which coupled with the fast, tight, V2 is perfect with the TLs IMHO.

To me the V2-> SBM-1 is THE combo to run behind the TLs.  The V2 is just such a great pre and brings out the best in the mid and low end of the TLs.  The V2 (or V3) alone is too neutral for the TLs high end....this is where the SBM-1 rounds out the package nicely.

I have run the TLs with  V3>SBM-1, m148> SBM1, and V3 alone.  The 148 was too warm and lost low-end detail as a result.  I really like the V3 alone, and with running the analog outs to the SBM-1.  I didn't do it enough to develop an opinion on liking or not liking it based on sound... but logistics-wise, I like the V3 because I don't have to carry a seperate box and power supply.

If you are willing to do it, the m148 > SBM1 with the hypers does sound fabulous.

I love my TL's with the V3, but V2/modsbm-1 would sound very nice I bet...

I always liked the m148 precisely because of the detail in the lowend...

i had one come out shitty, and that is what I am going on... maybe it was a fluke, because the second night with that same rig, same location ruled.
