Tascam DP-08 Non-Portable Recorder - question
« on: December 10, 2012, 10:39:27 AM »
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/657974-REG/Tascam_DP_008_DP_008_Portable_8_Track_Portastudio.html

I'm looking to recommend this to a venue that needs an inexpensive, non-portable four track recorder.  All they really need is something that can provide P48 to a pair of mics and take a stereo board feed.

This would seem to do the trick; the only thing that confuses me in the description is this:
"The DP-008 captures CD-quality audio, 2 tracks at a time, to widely-available SD/SDHC flash media for convenient and reliable storage."

I don't know if this means that, like most of the portable decks, it groups (or can group) the tracks so there is a stereo channel 1/2 as track 1 and 3/4 as track 2, or if this means something else.

Anyone actually use one and know?

I know this is an old thread, but in case you're still wondering, the "two tracks" are two mono tracks, AKA tracks 1/2 or 3/4, or 3/8, or any combination thereof. Keep in mind that all odd numbers are matched to "input A" (which you can set to the internals, line in, or mic in) and all the evens to "input B." So if you're recording tracks, you can use one mono odd track, and one mono even track at a time.

The DP-008 is more useful for creating demos and other recording situations where you want overdubs, a bit of processing, etc. It's not really made for recording live shows.

Also, CD-Quality audio must mean 16-bit, correct? Is that what they want?

Correct, the DP-008 only records up to 44.1/16. I think they figure a musician will eventually need to put it on CD anyway, so that's the ceiling.
