Topic: MGs -> V3 (at a mule show)

first time I am running the V3 with the MGs at mule tomorrow night.  Curious for any and all opinions on whether I should even consider rolloff (either from the mic body or the V3) for Mule..which we all know will have absurd amounts of bass  .  Appreciate all opinions!

I would say, no roll off.  if you capture too much bass for your liking, you can always reduce it in post.  if you use roll off and find that it's too little for your liking, you're coming up empty handed.

alright, I will run without rolloff...was kind of my plan anyway, but you never know how a new piece of gear will react with your mics...

I would definitely configure the V3 so that the rolloff has a -6db/octave slope not -12db/octave (not sure how it is shipped stock).  Personally, I've also configured mine so that the rolloff 1 is 100hz and rolloff 2 is 50hz.  This seems to give me two useful rolloff settings.  Though I am debating switching it back so it is 75hz and 125hz -- probably would never use 125hz rolloff, but 75hz might be a better all-around option than either 50hz or 100hz.

Once you configure your V3, if you use any rolloff, I would use the V3 not the mics.  I don't know about the MGs, but most mics have a rolloff slope of -12db/octave or -18db/octave which is pretty severe for the type of recording we do.

That said, I wouldn't run any rolloff for Mule.  It might make sense in the future, but for now you should learn what your equipment can and does do when unleashed.  Then you can make informed choices later on whether to rein it in. 

Of course, what do I know?  Last year at Mule, Markham and I were both faced with a similar choice, since I was running my AKGs for the first time and he was running his U89>m148.modSBM1 for the first time.  Both of us ran with no hpf, and both wound up with too much low end.    There's always post-processing though.

I am the kind of person, newly decided on this, that if the bass notes are clear and not that muffled, rattling bass like you here in the cars with not enough insulation/padding? to support to much bass, I use no roll off. Bill Laswell is an excellent example of the muffled feel it in your bones, see the bass actually shaking the speakers where I find rolloff necessary. I give it one song to decide then turn it on if I need it. I wouldn't use it for mule as andy's bass is rather clear

Oh, I should also add, you will never hear any glitches if you move back and forth between hpf choices on the V3 while recording.  Typical Grace attention to detail -- there is no noise and no glitches whatsoever in the wave form if you engage or disengage the rolloff while recording.  So if you start running a show with no rolloff and feel the low end is overwhelming, have no fear about turning on the hpf.

just a follow up...ran no rolloff last night and the tape is tight!  That was as clean sounding bass I think I have ever heard.  Honestly, it had as much to do with the room as it did the soundguy, but it sounded great.  I am amazed at how the V3 is bringing out detail in the mids I have never heard from my mics before....

When we had the MG 200/210's I tended to rpefer the sound of the mme over the V3 with them. It was close, but I just liked the bass a bit more. But I'm glad you liked they way it sounds. I still think the geffels rule! I was always impressed with them, the bass is fat but tight. Especially at 24 bit, just amazing!
