Title: MiniMe/V3>JWMod463 comparison
Post by: johnw on January 12, 2006, 12:44:13 PM
In case any other mod460 owners are trying to decide between a MiniMe and a V3, here's a quick comparison I did. The setup is DINA, 4' from the center of my JBL speakers spread 6' apart. The recording is the first minute of Brent Black from my 463>MME recording of moe. 12/31/05 (on archive). Full lineage: AKG CK63>A61>Jim Williams modified AKG 460>Seque Dogstars>MiniMe/V3>HOSA ODL-312>JB3>flac.

Were you surprised at all?

FWIW John, I d/l'd a few tracks on your source compared to mine on 12/31/2005 for moe, and i can honestly say, I couldmnt hear THAT MUCH of a difference, my FOB has a littl;e less crowd/more robustness, but comparing the mics>pre's, they sound DAMN similar to my ears, and i GREATLY prefer our sources to ANY of the schoeps ones, even gcomleys CMXY4V>722 tapes

what im saying is, both sound great w/ a nice crisp/clean sound, the mme does lack a slight amount of preamp clarity/detail that the v3 makes up for tho

not really saying 'mine is better' but just an observation from hearing 5 sources of the same songs :)

oh and what do YOU like better ???

Bean, what you just said is actually the reason that I decided to post this. I was extremely surprised at how similar they sounded. I think there may be a bit more detail on the V3, but a more rounded feel to the MiniMe. But there wasn't nearly as much difference as I thought there would be. I was thinking huge night and day. I wish I could have picked up an XLR splitter, another HOSA and another JB3 and run them both live for a better comparison, but I don't have that kind of time/cash. I really like both of these, but I'm going to try running the V3 for a while, so I hope I like that one better. If not, then I'll go back to the MiniMe. Oh and after streaming most of the sources, I can say that AKG definitely ruled the Thomas Wolfe over NYE!  8)

My expierience with the mme is that the closer to the source ie. on stage, the more the mme shines and the less it's more unfavorable quailities are brought to the forefront.  This said, I bet if you ran the same comp from a section in a large room, the V3 to mme difference would be much more apparent.

Mark and I did a comparison @ MMW on 12/29 with KM140s, but never compared them together.

(I waited till he left to let the Mme blow the V3 out the water ;D ;D)
before getting death threats from all the loyal V3 owners, just jokin

Anyways, I came to the same conclusion about the V3s amazing clarity, and detail.
The Mme seemed a bit more Phat or rounded like mentioned above.

Also, he ran ORTF I ran DINa, but the difference was very little to my ears.
If you can promise to keep a secret, I really liked his tape (V3).

Enough rambling I'll STFU and DL this comp.
