Title: Pro Tools First - free version, anyone use PT these days?
Post by: checht on December 21, 2019, 06:37:07 PM
Noticed they've made a free version with 16 track limit, more than enough for me.

I use Audacity, find it easy and fast, but wish I could use effects like eq in realtime. Also wish it were easier to incorporate RX-7 in my workflow.

Vision problems mean that Reaper is a non-starter, or I'd go there.

So, anyone used Pro Tools for what we do?

I still do the vast majority of my work in PT. Have some complaints here and there but generally love it

I'm curious to know what makes Pro Tools easier for you to see than Reaper?  Reaper has a large amount of skins/themes and layout options which let you vastly change its look.  They also recently put out a major update that has a lot of visual improvements as well.

Here is a skin I used to use:

I run a recording studio, and have never used it.

I downloaded it for a look.  Haven't dug in much, but have mainly observed their well streamlined ability to take your wallet through simple upgrade and add-on paths.  Need a plug-in?  Don't buy, rent for a week!

I attempted to import a 15 track session done on some other version of PT.   Note 16 tracks = voices, which appears to mean open tracks without audio!  The master fader and busses seem to count in that 16, at least for import, so it disallowed most of the audio import and loaded everything else.  Just crazy.

It seems like a thing to stay away from unless you need to start trading PT sessions with other studios after signing on for the whole ride.  For what folks around here need, it's got no edge.

The question of graphics visibility is tough.  The latest version of Digital Performer has scalable graphics, but it's not cheap or easy to learn.   There must be some others with scalability or varying skins.

In Audacity, If you use the parametric EQ, you can listen in real time as you fiddle around with it.
