indeed it wasnt the answer. killed the sound of an already sub-par recording.

It doesn't sound terrible as it is, just a bit funky.  Not surprised mono didn't sound better.  Maybe mixing channels a bit will help - say L ch = 75%L, 25%R and vice versa.  ???
