Interesting option to replace my zx3 ... tech spec says one charge is good for 80 minutes of video.

This little camera is a beast,  I am just waiting a few months to see if price comes down and will be picking one up.

Only draw back it doesnt have big zoom.

Got it and can say that i really like it so far.

1)The battery/memory card door has a little lock switch which doesn't feel that sturdy.

2)The manual is built into the camera using the ? mark button.

3)The camera is highly customizable and are the buttons as well.

4)It will take some time(at meast for me)before i am comfortable with all the assignable and changeable functions. etc.

5) Video mode has full manual or Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority as well as AUTO

6) White Balance has Many settings and can be adjusted in Kelvin Degrees.

Gonna test it out more this weekend.

I have this camera.  It has great low light performance.

Here's a sample I shot without flash of a guitarist who was playing and thrashing around.  It's surprisingly sharp and has fairly good dynamic range in the contrast and low noise even ISO 3200.

Here's another shot from a recent concert...

This is the perspective from where I was sitting, the above image zoomed and cropped for the result.
At 20MP, it gives good detail even without having a high amount of zoom.

So for still images, this camera is a good choice when you can't get a DLSR into a venue but can get a point and shoot in.

For video, it's a mixed bag.  The video is good in 1080p 60fps but the audio is awful.  Here's a clip I shot showing how clipped the audio is.  Granted, I was right up on the stage monitors so it wasn't an ideal placement for audio recording.

And one from the other concert, seating position the same as shown previously for that still image I shot:

Again, poor ability to handle loud bass.

Here's a test I ran versus a Sony PCM-M10 I recently purchased....internal mics here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qroW9Vxuvs

I'm now looking at using the M10 more effectively for recordings, i.e., getting external mics etc.

It's why I joined this forum and I'm finding a lot of great information on it so far.

A couple more from the Sony DSC-RX100 showing decent low light performance.  This was at a psytrance party this weekend.

Lack of 10X or greater zoom is a deal breaker for me. If it had 10X I'd be all over this camera.

When you say 10x zoom, are you talking about digital zoom?

No serious concert filmer would ever use anything but optical zoom.

None of these small avchd cameras have good audio, just too expensive and  bulky to add decent audio circuits.  The codec is not meant for acquisition,  it is a distribution format.  I'd  recommend  running audio separate and syncing in post.

Best,

John

Finally screwed with all the settings so I used manual focus and exposure. Audio is always from post. Looks pretty good in my opinion.

The RX100 is a dream and the RX100M2 (which came out 6 weeks ago) is EVEN BETTER.  I recently sold my Panasonic LX7 after getting a killer deal on the RX100M2.

Low light performance is incredible.  Very little grain/noise and the ability to shift from 20MP to 5MP and use the backlit sensor to help with the lighting makes a great difference as well.  I've shot both right at a fence with this as well as using the "CLEAR IMAGE" digital zoom and have noticed only a slight degradation.  This helps when you're in an amphitheatre or arena and can't get close.

They're bloody expensive cameras but they're a dream to work with (once you get used to shooting in manual modes).  :)

If they would have 12X zoom or more this would be my favourite camera.

12x would be very nice.

I agree.  I've taken many photos with the camera in 5MP mode with "clear image zoom" and have been very impressed by the results.  I used to use a Canon G11 and Panasonic LX7 prior to this and the Sony does a much better job in low-light situations.

I've run 10-12X in 5MP mode and the shots are VERY clear with very little digital zoom information in them.  Could probably get a 5x7 or 8x10 out of it without much of an issue.  Anything bigger just wouldn't happen.

How is the auto-focus & exposure on this cam for video? Better than the Lumix cams?

I've been pleasantly surprised by the video I've shot with the camera.  Auto-focus seems to be more stable than my Lumix.  Exposure's been better, as well, because you can manually step down the exposure.   I wouldn't call it a replacement for a true video camera but it does the job.
