sdbd A>D ?
« on: June 06, 2005, 12:53:06 PM »
I have an AD20, and would like to be able to take an analog feed from the board and convert to digital.  The problem is, generally, the board feeds are too hot to run through the AD20.

Is there something *little* and preferable cheap that will do the A>D or does anyone else do this with the AD20 somehow?

thanks-

paul

You could buy attenuators, though it'd likely be easiest to just go SBD>whatever deck you're using...
Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

Let me know if you want to sell the ad20 :-)

not selling the AD20 ; ) I use it with my AUD setup. It is a great little toy for the price.

yea, I'm using a jb3, and I would just rather go digi-in than let it do the job.  The 1/8 inch in scares me - and doesn't seem to be a tight fit.

And I keep hearing about these attenuators, but I've yet to see one in the field or for sale.

I would love just a little hand held deal with a balanced volume knob so I could dial the feed down. This seems like it would be such a simple thing, but I haven't found a clean solution yet.

Paul - check the Archive's Pre/ADC/Processors forum for a thread on line transformers and attenuators.  A couple different models listed.  And if you're a DIY kinda guy, DKlein posted some info on building your own - search around.

You're describing a sony sbm-1, out of production, but frequently available used.

Paul - I actually put that up with you in mind.  You started the thread looking for the same thing I was wanting... so I documented it as I built it.  PM'd you about it it too!

yes,

I appreciate that.  I'm just not too overwhelmed with free time, and it seems like something that could end up being bought or hacked...

I could end up building it sometime though

thanks!

these are very easy to use.

=====================

Shure A15AS Switchable Attenuator

The A15AS attenuator operates by, in effect, bridging the microphone output and allowing maximum signal handleing with minimum loading-caused distortion or reduction in clipping level.  Thus high-output condenser microphones used at very high sound pressure levels can be connected to ordinary low-impedance inputs with appropriate attenuation for each application.

                    Key Features

                    •    Provides 15, 20, or 25 dB of microphone attenuation
                    •    Requires use of balanced signals; XLR female in and XLR male out
                    •    Passes phantom power

I got a pair of attenuator cables (that are also RCA > XLR adaptors for use with the AD-20) when I got my AD-20 4 years ago from Core Sounds.  They shouldn't be hard to find.

IMO the jb3 a>d is about as good as the ad20s a>d to begin with so...
