Post by: wilsondmb on October 11, 2004, 04:04:16 PM
looking for something that I could conceal easily....maybe tape to my back since that ussually doesn't get patted down

I don't have the strength to handheld an entire show

the 680 folds up really small and its nicely built.  I've never tried to stealth with it, I use it instead of a 2nd tripod since I can't carry 2 tripods and a mic stand.  If I were going to stealth video I think this would work well.

This one looks interesting - folds up small and extends almost 6' (http://www.manfrotto.com/product/templates/templates.php3?sectionid=14&itemid=693).

problem is, monopods are almost as difficult to maintain during a show, as handheld, unless you tie it down, and even then it's still nowhere near as stable.  with a tripod, you can dance or go to the can.

manfrotto is the dankest brand, but you DEFINITELY need a perfectly fluid head on top like this one...

i'd go with that head, and a decent tripod support.

or here's a page where you can order them together (high end equipment like this is usually sold separately)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=search&Q=

what i do (and i've stealthed over 100 shows), is wrap the top and bottom so all you can see is 3 metal legs and tell them it's a mic stand.

another option is a walking stick (which you can walk right in with, just limp) -- many have 1/4" thread on the top covered by a wooden ball, etc.

I second the Bogen 680B.  I have one for photography and it's small and strong.

I have the 682B (http://www.manfrotto.com/product/templates/templates.php3?sectionid=14&itemid=1815) - essentially the same as the 680 but black w/retractable legs.  I also got the 3369 extension for it (for up to 7' more), but if you can stealth all that in, you'd blow your cover once you fully raised it.

I know some stealth filmers are using Chestpods (manufactured by Cullmann) instead of tripods/monopods. I've never used one myself though.
Here's a link to what they look like:

While i'm sure that's a great head, it a bit out of my rpice range.  Do you have any cheaper solutions for a head?

I was looking at this monopod/head combo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=353318&is=REG

But i'm not sure if the head is good or bad....

Thanks

That's a great price for that head/tripod combo!  I've spent much more than $96.oo on a trip od alone.
I won the first monopod that was posted.  I use it for still photography when I have a pass.  I don't thinknit would be ideal for video.  BUt hey, I don't do video, so that's my .$04

"Stealthpod":
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5602&is=REG

Adapter:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=5357&is=REG&addedTroughValue=5602_REG&addedTroughType=accessory

This is a nice and lightweight fluid head:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=272630&is=REG

When you save up buy these legs that will also work with that head (definately worth the price).
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=253564&is=REG

OR,
on a budget buy this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=284634&is=REG

My personaly recommendation is to go with the Manfrotto setup. That is the one I use. You can't beat that stealthpod/head/legs combo for a versatile setup!
The stealthpod 3373 is more sturdy than the monopod with legs that was mentioned in a previous comment. It is easy to stealth with.
