Hey all,
A long time taper friend of mine recently had his Edirol R09 die and wants to replace it. He only uses the internal microphones and wants something similar to the Edirol, which he says Roland is not building anymore.
I suggested Tascam but he is looking at a Sony:

When I looked at it briefly on line is seems to be marketed as a 'voice recorder'. Does anyone have any input on this deck for music? Ease of use, ergonomics, etc?

M10 and d50/d100 have built in mics

I've been pleasantly surprised at how well the SX2000 works with minijack powered mics. I've used it with binaural mics and basic interview mics (Senn MD 46) and got very good results. Does not work with phantom power. For a mic that does not need a lot of "juice" you use an XLR to minijack cable. The old M10 was better, but this is smaller and more svelte, and paired with the right mic works fine. The internal mics are "okay" but need to be used with the supplied windscreen.

Your friend, if he's used to Edirol, should consider the Roland R-05 as well. Similar menus and functionality as it is an Edirol deck with the Roland badge on it. Slightly smaller and lighter compared to the M10.

Is the R05 still made? I believe that Rick wants to buy a new deck. What about the Tascam D40? Are the internals good? Better than the current Sony?

I stand corrected if he's looking to buy new. That said, I can't speak to the D40. Perhaps somebody else here can.

If he wants to use internal mics for music recording I highly recommend the Tascam dr2d. The internal mics are cardioids so even at the close spacing you get some stereo separation and they sound good. Not too bright, not too bassy. Up close it actually sounds pretty good.
Here's a link to a recording I made from the back of a small arena, dead center, 15 rows or so from the floor. Not the best but I don't stealth really. My girlfriend got the tickets and volunteered to put the recorder under her boob and get it in if I recorded the show.

Sadly the DR2d isn't made anymore either. Daspy has a slew of them because they are no longer made and that's what he uses for his record deck.
I agree that Tascam would be a better choice. I really like my DR100mkII.

If he'd like another Roland, then he could go for the Roland R-07 which they just announced a couple of days ago:

Perfect, the Roland R-07 almost exactly meets that budget at $229:

Otherwise, if he really wants to go cheaper, I own the Tascam DR-22WL which is silly cheap but I'd recommend it for such use.
