Title: Question regarding cables Nak MX100-> recorder XLR input
Post by: Hypnocracy on September 24, 2010, 05:17:04 AM
I've done a few shows since I got the Fostex...dug thru the cable box collection from the  past 22 years to cobble together a interconnect...It works but I'm ready to make up some cables with right angle male XLR's for a couple of scenarios...

All are straight forward except the XLR to RCA to go from the FR2LE mic/Line input into my Nak MX100 Preamp...there are two methods

Shield to Barrel of RCA
Pin 3 to Barrel of RCA

 ???

xlr
+ = pin 2
- = pin 3
shield = pin 1

RCA
+ = tip
- = ring
shield = open

Does the FR2LE have the combo XLR + 1/4" jacks?  If so, you might be better off going from the RCA's on the MX-100 to standard 1/4" Tip/sleeve into the FR2LE.
(assuming you don't have a modded unit which sometimes disables them)

If you read that Rane page http://www.rane.com/note110.html is says pretty clearly:
- avoid doing a unbalanced <-> balanced conversion if you can.
- if you must do a conversion, use an isolation transformer.
- If transformer isolation is not an option, special cable assemblies are a last resort.  (their bold italicized emphasis).

You can buy a simple RCA > 1/4" cable at Radio Shack fairly cheap.  Why jump right to the method of last resort?

There is no inherent advantage to jumping to XLRs, unless you are running long runs between the MX100 and the Fostex... at which point you should use transformers.

Also, if you accidentally turn on the phantom power to the Fostex you won't send it back through the MX100.

Joe...it is a Busman Tmod FR2LE...purchased from Fanofthemule...I'd have to contact Busman to find out if the 1/4 is disabled....

But there is mostlikely one of those 1/4 to RCA's laying about...I'll check if I have one...

AFAIK, Busman doesn't disable the 1/4" jacks.  Oade has done it in some cases, but I haven't heard of Busman doing it.

1/4 it is...Should I buy TRS connectors and follow #10 or #12 on Rane wire diagram? Which would give extra insurance from Phantom running into the MX100?

the nak is rca out and the fostex is 1/4 in, right?

If so you want rca to ts 1/4" (#19)

It sounds like you just need a simple unbalanced cable RCA > 1/4 TS

The extra insurance against phantom is the 1/4 jack - and only using two conductors.

I suspect the FR2LE accepts balanced and unbalanced signals happily with no special cable wiring.
