Okay so one of my u89s came with a schock mount that I can screw the mic down to very securely. Perfect for suspending a mic upside down for Blumlein or M/S!
Now this is a dumb question but do you need to decode Blumlein like you would with M/S? Logically I would say yes but I want to make sure.
Obviously I can decode on my computer but what about mixing down blumlein on the fly using a V2 or other preamp with an m/s circuit?
-
Logically to me, you would not need to decode, as you cannot adjust blumlein like you can m/s. It is just xy with a different polar pattern selected - to me.
I do not have direct knowledge, just saying that my logic says differently. ???

and there you have it...thanks mike
still want to come up and tape with you sometime - have you seen the consort lately?
-
Thanks guys... I was picturing the orientation wrong... more like a m/s witha rear lobe... "+" if you will as oppossed to an x/y style setup "x" if you will.
I have only listened to a few blumlein recordings and the definitely lack bass... I'll just have to pick my spots carefully.
Glad to know I've got this option though!
-
I'm only thinking of using it for acoustic music or on-stage jazz recordings right now.
If by chance I'm in a pa taping situation where I can run u89s blumlein FOB I'll give it a try for sure 8)
-
Tim, congrats on the 89s! Much fun to be had...
-
Tim,
I'm taking your U89's anyways so don't worry about it...
Eric
-
from my cold dead hands...
just don't loan them to Nate and it'll be all good... ;)
-
Tim,
I wouldn't run blumlein in any other situation other than close-micing and on-stage applications.
-Jason (you're not going to let me borrow the U89's are you?) Barbour

jason--
if I can't get my batteries and other gear to raleigh for panic you can run my u89s for the weekend, otherwise I look forward to a direct comparison with the tl's
-
Trey,
What would keep you from being able to get you batteries and other gear here for the shows?
-JB
-
flying with that gear, been told to have batteries in checked bag, so if that bag doesn't make it, screwed???
-
ahhh...Well, I think you will be alright. Good luck with it all. Look forward to running the comp! :)

I would not put the batteries in a checked bag, I would carry them on.
If you carry them on and they're concerned about the batts, you can break out the documentation, and after a minor delay you're on your way.
If you check them and they're concerned about the batts, your bag will not make it to your final destination.

Trey......
Here is a document from ecocharge regarding sla's that was developed for helping w/ questions by airlines in regards to battery systems. (bagged from Oade board)
http://www.ecocharge.com/PDF_forms/transportationpolicy.pdf
edit;
OK,...... Now I see that it was directed to your post on the Oade forum....
Duh!, oh well.
Brian Skalinder;
Maybe this should go in the archive section here?
Peace
Mike
So here is a question, would this documentation apply to our homemade SLA's as well, without the ecocharge logo? If not, anyone know where I can get some ecocharge stickers???

If the TSA is really on the ball (doubtful), I'm guessing you'd need documentation from either the specific retailer or manufacturer of the SLA battery system.
Hearsay once told me Ecocharge uses Panasonic batteries. I don't know if this is true or not.
I've posted the appropriate documentation in the Archival section for the following battery manufacturers/retailers:
Panasonic
Powersonic
Ecocharge
If anyone has transportation documentation on other batteries/manufacturers, please send it my way. Thanks.

Honestly how this ended up under blumlein is exactly why I love taperssection but I pulled this from the airlines I am flying and have checked on two other airlines.
"Carry-on baggage is limited to one piece per customer, plus a personal item such as a purse, briefcase, laptop, small backpack, diaper bag or camera case. The personal item cannot exceed total overall dimensions of 36 inches, and the other item of baggage cannot exceed the following maximum dimensions:
Valet Closet--4x23 1/2x45
Overhead Stowage--10x16x24
Underseat Stowage--8x16x21
Both items cannot exceed a total combined weight of 40 pounds. Carry-on baggage allowance may be restricted due to lack of space."
So one bag is a rakgear bag, which at one time was stuffed full, but now I'm carrying two, I mean the other will be a purse. I am traveling with u89>big ass cable I can't place the name to>oade m148>mini me>d10 pro II and 150>v3, which means two 6vs and 1 12v. This stuff does all fit in the rack gear bag but I created atleast two more people by doing so, this bag is marvelous. So thus the second bag to reduce the actual size of the rackgear. Here's to it no weighing over 40 lbs.

I *really* love my RakGear bag. I used to keep my X-Streams in the very bottom of the bag underneath the internal shelving, but now that I have Zaolla's, they are way too fucking thick to fit down there. Big bummer for me! I had everything mapped out and distributed perfectly in this bag, now these Zaolla's won't fit! I now have to roll them up nicely and put them around the V2 on the top shelf.
I should have copywritten running gear in the RakGear bags! I was the OG of running gear in them!
-
yeah zaolla's thats what I got
-
those cables caused more funny looks than the u89s. them are some big and heavy mic cables...
-
not sure if its been covered, but someone posted that blumlein was more like MS "+" w/a rear lobe vs. XY "X"
that is not correct.
it is setup XY, crossed at 90deg just like you woule w/a pair of cards, only its a pair of figure of eights.
the resulting coverage looks like an X, not a +.
-
thanks Nick.. yeah I wasn't sure and so I was wondering how to visualize it. I have been corrected.. now I just want to try it out!
-
What are you thinking of running Blumlein for Tim?
-
nothing really yet.. .maybe some on-stage stuff.
