Title: 'AT831 phantom mod' versus 'AT853 battery box'
Post by: kuba on May 24, 2005, 10:41:02 AM
I'm thinking about phantom modding my AT831. I found out that it requires lots of bulk (XLR mini connectors, adaptors, phantom module..) which means $$$.

I'm just curious what setup would sound better, phantom powered AT831 or 9V battery powered AT853? So that, what would be better solution for me??

Btw. I know AT853(Rx) phantom powered rulesĀ  :P

And one more question, would AT853CELE (853 caps) fit AT831 bodies?

I got my AT853's phantom modded with the addition of AT8533x modules from the soundprofessionals and I love em.

No I don't believe they do. Check the last post in this thread: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=42075.0

I have used the stock AT831b lav cardioid mic for many great stack recordings, although rarely running via phantom power, just using a single AA. I also had the old SP CMC-8's;  AT933's with the 853 interchangeable caps. From my experience, running the AT831b's via battery power or phantom power was a better choice for loud PA rock shows when compared to the SP AT933's I purchased later.

Also I believe that the AT831b Cardioid capsule is interchangeable with the AT803b Omni capsule, although not recommended.

I ran a direct comparison at a Velvet Revolver gig between:

SPCMC2>SPSPSB1 battery box>Nomad JB3                             Recording came out sweet
SPCMC8s (Boas old mics)>SPSPSB1>Nomad JB3                       Badly overloaded

The CMC8s are currently awaiting conversion to run with a PP9 battery box..

Anyone ever phantomed the AT831s? Make much difference?

I got mine phantom modd'd, unfortunately when they were just the sp-cmc-2's I don't think I ever ran them in large venue PA situations so I can't compare. From what I've heard I bet an A/B comparison wouldn't turn up too much of a difference. If you plan on taping a lot of VERY LOUD shows, then maybe the small amount of dinero (somewhere around $50, give or take) would be worth it to prevent the mics from overloading.

831s phantom modded? why would you spend the money to do this?
unless you're taping a source over 131 dB you're not going to need anything more than sound pro's 9v battery pack. and you're not going to tape anything louder than 131 dB.
