Anyone know how to update R-09 firmware?
« on: March 29, 2007, 07:53:56 PM »
I've tried it and it downloads to my r09, but when I try to update it the unit doesn't recognize the file.

what kind of sd card are you writing the data to?  that's probably the issue.

Transcend 4GB SCHD card, just like others have recommended to use.

turn off, insert card, plug in wall power, not battery.
turn on while pushing REC button, follow instructions

Done all that and still I get (--no card--) (--no update file--), but if I look in the root directory I see R09_update_120 and it does record with v1.10 fine, so the card does work.

You might have way better luck using the smaller SD card as is usually supplied with the deck, or use no more than 2 GIG size card for this purpose.

Do upgrade as before without a computer connection.

If 2 GIG, or ANY size card is going to work at all for upgrade purpose, freshly reformat INSIDE the deck, then transfer the update files into the card as instructed.

After upgrade use, good practice is reformat this card again before using it for recording audio.

yeah, the update allows you to use a 4 GB card.  Before you update, the 4 Gb card isn't supported.

I tried the 64MB card that came supplied with the unit with the same failing results. Do I need to buy a 2GB card to do this?  ???

Maybe so if now so unlucky to have a defective 64 MB card (use another card= or <2 GIG), but also possible you're still not doing 'something' right, or far less likely the deck might be broken?

BTW forgot to mention I have always done my deck upgrades on battery power (too lazy to pull out the AC adapter), but doubt this makes any difference in the outcome.

The cards do work fine though, I can record on both of them so both are supported with the v1.10 that is currently installed. I only wanted to install the v1.20 so that I can shut off the red light and such, so it's not that the cards aren't currently supported. When you guys did your upgrades did you work with Windows? Does the file need any other conversion other than just clicking on Download, Save or Run, and then selecting the r-09 from the list of drives? I download the update file to the r-09 but when I look at it on my pc,the .UPD file doesn't have it's own icon, just the generic windows icon, and it asks for a program to use if you click on it, so I'm wondering why it's not being recognized as a usable file by either my r-09 or my computer. Would any resident anti-virus or firewall settings effect the way that it is downloaded? I've tried shutting them all down and then go through the process but I still get the same error message when I try to update it (--no card--) (--no update file--). I'll then try and record a little test wav and it does work fine, so I'm totally puzzled.

I got my R09 this morning, and I was just about to stick my sparkling new 4gig SDHC card in before I saw this thread. Used the crappy 64mb card instead, updated with no problems. It would appear that you only need 2mb for the updating process, so maybe going out and grabbing a cheap small capacity card to use just for updates might be an idea.

Just a thought.

Did you use the zip file from the Roland site, or the autoextract file from the Edirol site. I've been using the autoextract file from the Edirol site, I think I'm gonna try the Roland winzip file next.

This is where I got mine:

http://www.rolandus.com/support/downloads_updates/eula.aspx?DownloadId=1817

(Go to I agree, blah blah blah, and then d/l will start). Comes as a zip file. All worked nicely, took maybe 20, 30 seconds.

Actually, I think your file SHOULD HAVE the .upd designation if it's going to work right; if the other files have file extensions, but no UPD on the upgrade file, then seems best to download another copy to unzip.
