The NEW TrekStor Vibez... a piece of crap.
« on: April 07, 2007, 10:13:31 AM »
So I got my vibez yesterday and my initial reaction is this thing is worthless as a recording device. I did several tests yesterday. The most heinous of all was the sound test. Recording line-in with no input there was an incredible amount of noise.... first of all a clicking, and second a high-frequency whirring.

Second I tried recording line-in from the headphone jack of my HiMD player. I started on zero volume, worked my way up to full, and back down to zero. The noise is very apparent at start, as the volume goes back it receded into the back and eventually is hardly noticeable, but as the volume comes back down, the noise is very apparent again.

Third I tried recording through the built in mic. I recorded in a room and made no noise, so it was room noise only. There was even more of a whirring sound, which was somewhat different, and on other tests I did with this setting, the voice was listenable, but still incredibly blocked by the mechanical noise.

I noticed a thread on the developers site with someone claiming the same problems, and he called the manufacturer and they said he had a defective unit. http://www.riovolution.org/thread/556He claimed he thought it was a design flaw, not a defect. I also saw posts on a german forum alluding to the same, although it wasn't quite easy to discern as it was translated using google.

I also recorded my band jamming last night. First to test the time and battery, but this is how I discovered the noise issue. It was readily apparent on the quiet passages, and even at times on the louder ones. As for the battery, right out of the box (probably 40% charge) it gave me ~3:20 of record time with the face light on the whole time. This actually created a 1.99gb file so I have yet to see it's capabilities over the 2 gig boundary. But I also can't imagine having to record for more than 3:20 straight. So battery life is good...files we're incredibly easy to transfer onto my mac. But then I listened to them and well... I'm really hoping my unit's defective.

I don't know what's causing this noise... not too adept on that sort of thing....could be the ADC, more likley it's some kind of interference caused by some other aspect of the device. It's odd because on some of my tests the noise changes or gets worse, and at some points it stops all together for a few seconds and then comes back again.....maybe someone with more experience could chime in with an opinion. As for me, this thing is going back to the store, and I'm sticking with my HiMD as a stealth recorder. This thing is sweet looking, small, and would make a nice DAP.... but if this noise is unavoidable it has absolutely no use for what we're doing here.
