cellphones interferences with my Iriver !
« on: October 20, 2007, 06:59:47 AM »
Hello folks !

I need help. I bought an Iriver H320 last week, and rockboxed it. I did my first recording last night with it  (plugged to a battery box and a Sony ECM 719 mic). Unfortunately, if it caught the music very well, it also caught those damn interferences caused by cellphones, (those strange little "bips bips bips" that you can hear when somebody receives call or an SMS around you) ... That shit ruined my recording  :(.

It never happened to me in the past, neither with my old MD recorder, nor with my first Iriver.

Does anybody here know what to do, ... and if there is something to do ?

Thanx for your help.

turn your phone off   ;D

with all the SMS in the air, this issue is pretty common.
i would do some testing at home to confirm that it is in fact the recorder causing this and not the Sony mic.

another thing to consider is using the Neutrik RF shielded XLR connectors.
and, of course, you should always wear your tin foil RF deflecting hat when taping, like these guys:

again, your showing your cluelessness.

Thanx for the reply, and ... whaou ! Beautiful hats !! I didn't know Albert from Monaco wears so nice hats !  :D

Well, I had my phone in my pocket, very close to my mic, and I didn't turn it off. I didn't receive any SMS or calls during the set, but maybe it reacted to some interferences, here and there in the audience. I'll do another trial soon.

if someone else has the same problem, let me know.

the interference is going to be affecting the mic more so than the recorder.  you dont have to actually recieve any message for you to get the noise, it happens intermittently when the phone "talks" to the towers.

the least you can do to prevent this is to TURN OFF YOUR PHONE.  the people around you, that is another story.

i had that little mic for first couple shows and got spinning hard drive noise on the recordings b/c the gain was too high and i was using plug in power...

i bet a battery box solves the problem.

edit:  ^^based on that said, i do not think i was cellphone interference at all...thats my opinion tho...that mic isnt the best piece of audio equipment in the world...YMMV

About 3 months ago, I was taping MOD playing at our local hole-in-the-wall hard rock club. There was some noise coming from the guitar or bass amp.  Turned out the guitar or bass player had his cell phone on top of the amps and the bips were being amplified and broadcast.  Billy Milano starts giving out some sh0t about this, in a joking manner.
