that seems like a pretty standard price for an unmodded one  these days.  i think i sold one last winter for about that same price.

but, +t for new toys regardless.

You'll just need standard female>male XLR mic cables.

Unfortunately, you won't need the Hosa box now, as the UA5 has an optical output - so a simple toslink>mini jack optical cable will be all you need to run UA5>JB3.
Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

In order to run a digital signal from your UA5 to JB3, you need to modify your UA5 - the so-called "digi-mod".  Check the UA5 FAQ for more info.

I will warm mod it.  I think...

FWIW, the only warm mod for the UA5s was offered by the Oade Bros.  They will only mod units purchased directly from them.  So your only chance for a warm mod on your eBay-bought UA5 is DIY.  Have fun!  :)

the busman2 mod is pretty nice sounding if you can get him to mod it for you... it is a great substitute for the T-mod or P-mod, though it does sound very different than the W-mod.

Nah man, you did good. Getting it modded isn't a problem really. Talk to busman2 about his mods. They're not very expensive and really open the box up. Alternatively, lots of folks are able to do the digi-mod, many will do it free I think. Post an ISO in the yard sale for some soldering help.

Just my $0.02's worth:
Yank the resistor with a warm 15 watt-wire-tipped soldering iron, forceps, and a magnifying glass, call it done.
I wouldn't attempt those tiny omps without experience...

If you have experience, holler out!   ;D

Yes, that's just the digimod.
Be sure to ground the soldering iron tip to the frame of the UA-5, the solder sucka and forceps are OK, the butane iron must be turned-down-low, to just warm enough to melt the solder, but not the traces on the board(very small and light)
It is also very small work, the resistor is about the size of a grain of rice and is surface mounted (SMT).
I prefer a tiny tipped variable temperature solder station.

If you have any scrap SMT boards to practice on, I highly recommend it.
The actual resistor to remove is described in a document online, and I think a digimod sounds pretty dang good on its own, with the right mics.
Search "UA-5 modification" or visit Nick's site  http://www.nickspicks.com/
[EDIT] Nick took it down, you may want to ask him why, he may have found something out about it.
Also, you may want to search TS.com for all of the UA-5 information here.

Don't forget that this modification voids your warantee, if any.
