iRiver and JB3 question
« on: June 03, 2009, 01:24:23 PM »
I have been considering of late whether it would be worthwhile from time to time to have a recorder as a backup to my R-09HR that was more of an MP3 player than an obviously dedicated audio recording machine.

It seems the two that make most sense in this regard are either the iRiver 120 or the Nomad JB3.  I know about the 16/44 technical limitations.

If you use one of these and have thoughts (or if you similarly keep one around only for specific situations), please send a PM.

If you aren't stuck on optical input, the H320 can be had for a good deal usually on eBay.  Put Rockbox on it and you are set.  Great player, not so cute though with it's fake carbon fiber look.  On the other hand, color screen and some killer games.  I use a H320 for listening, will play all major file formats including FLAC, OGG, WavPack, and of course, Wav.

Agreed, there's even a video display mode with Rockbox, and USB-on-the-go, to hook up with your digicam and use for data storage. You can record FM radio with the Hxx0 series too.
Comparing the Rockbox interface with JB3 is like night and day. It's a whole new generation, you have much more control over your listening experience. And don't forget the Hxx0 series are smaller!

I woulldn't go for a JB3.
iriver series are cheaper, more reliable and you can use them as your everyday player.
