Title: CA-11 alternatives?
Post by: magmazing on May 31, 2016, 02:36:22 PM
I've been using CA-11 Cards for the last six years. What are some of the best comparable alternatives from other brands? My main pair of CA-11s have been with Chris for repairs since February. My backup pair just became faulty. I need an alternate plan in case my repaired mics don't get back to me by July when I'll be attending multiple festivals and major shows.

I record shows at outdoor festivals, arena shows and nightclubs. I prefer cards to help cut out some of the yelling around me. I have a Church Audio battery box and also a Ugly II pre-amp

Would something from Sound Professionals be the best bet?

My other desperation plan would be to find another pair of used CA-11s.  Can my older CA-11 caps be used on the newer CA-11 Mark IIs? Or are the sizes different?

AT843's are a good choice.

AKG manufactures some "hanging" mic's, but I haven't heard them.

There is a tasty pair of MK4's in YS for $900 right now.   ;D

magmazing - just curious how much yelling and screaming does the CA-11 CARDs cut out as opposed to the CA-11 OMNIs?  Seems like it never fails there is always an IDIOT who seems to sit directly behind me and he/she will have to be the center of attention and try to out do the band!

I usually clip my CA-11's OMNI to a tie clasp style clip that lays on my chest.

Thanks

Obviously anyone yelling or loud chatting will get picked up no matter what, but I've found that crowd noise in general is dampened quite a bit with cards and I tend to have my mics clipped to my hat near my ears. I have both card and omni caps and I just find the cards sound slightly closer to having a board feed feel to them. I've had friends and even some local bands ask if I had a board feed.

all you will ever need and you wont look back.   (IHMO)

I'd compare these favorably to many pricier mics given the advantage in many cases of placement of these stealthy guys versus  LD / SD  studio mics  on  a stand.   and in my opinion the finishing is much more professional compared to the  Church Audio products.

I've had a pair for over 12 years and no issues.

Or these. Better option IMHO.

Thanks for the input everybody. The SP-CMC-4U are probably more in my price range. Just wish the deadrats they offer were black and not white. I already look stupid wearing black ones on my CA-11s clipped near my ears. White would be much worse.

I'm pretty sure I recall the 4U (as opposed to plain 4) indicate that they come with the low sens mod, but someone more knowledgeable can check me on this.

And yes, they are excellent. I've used CA-14 cards, and the 4Us compare quite well to those. (I've posted comparison samples on a thread... somewhere.)

If the 4U come with the low sensitivity mod, why does the website list it as a $45 add-on?

See, I knew I needed to be checked on this.

If the 4 and the 4U are in fact the same, then yeah, you'd want to go for the $45 low-sens add-on.

Unless you can find some second hand 4.7k modded MM-HLSC-1's (killer mics, Sennheiser MKE 2 capsules) I'd recommend SP-CMC-4U (AT 853 capsules) too, based on some really great sounding tapes I've heard.
On the other hand, why would 200$ mics sound better than 400$ mics (from the same manufacturer) ?

We use Sennheiser MKE 2's for our on-air staff at the TV station I work at. Great mics. Their cables are a b***h though. They kink and you can't get them to straighten.

Has anyone from Canada ordered from Sound Professionals? Trying to figure out how much duty/taxes/brokerage I'd be dinged with. The shipping options are already up there with UPS ($83), USPS Express ($54) and USPS First-Class ($19).
