Title: Advise on Church ST-9100 plus Sony M1
Post by: emalvido on February 23, 2008, 03:24:52 PM
Hello board:
My rig:  SP-CMC-8>ST-9100>M1
Anyone with expereince using Church´s ST-9100 along witha Sony m1 DAT? kind of new taping with the ST-9100>M1
Need advise, might be a dumb question:
1.-Turn the M1 knob to the top, 10 and control the levels with the ST-9100? why? to avoid double knob check on both, (difficult when you are stealth,  its dark, 2 knobs, security geeks, taking out the stuff etc...) will I have a brickwalled result? nice result?
or.....
Adjust my M1 levels just as always 7-8  and the knob on the ST-9100 midway of course aware of the venerable the "clipping light" not to turn on.
ahhh and of course I always use LINE In at 48Khz
Thanks!

I double knob check when running ST-9100 > M1.  It's a pain when stealthing, but I don't want to clip either on the pre or the M1.

75% 9100 the rest of the gain should be made up with the M-1 you will not need much gain anywayif your taping a loud band.

i do not run a church audio pre, but have run the M1 with many other pre's. typically, i run the M1 set to ~4 to 4.5 line in. as i recall, anything much past that starts heading into input overload.

you might try this: do an analog patch from another M1 (or any other deck that you KNOW outputs correct consumer levels), i bet you will find that setting the copy deck M1 level to 4ish and compare meters you will find them both doing pretty much the same things

my 2 cents

Hello:
Well  just following Chris advise (taped moderate loud rock show):
"75% 9100 the rest of the gain should be made up with the M-1"
Leaved the 9100  at 75% then set the M1 knob, hide gear, enjoy the show and prayed to grab a great taping.
The result? WOW! by having the 9100 at 75% I had louder clearer sound, levels on M1 leaved them as always; hitting a little further the 12 on the middle.
Now I dont need to turn up the volume at MAX of the M1 as my previous 3-4 tapings with the 9100.
Before this I was afraid to push the 9100 further, so  I used at 50% (little arrow on teh middle) I was afraid of clipping.
What a great device the 9100 is!
Thanks for the advise Chris!  :o
