Topic: Mastering SDB+AUD Matrix doubt

Hi,

Yesterday I taped a band, the recording came out great (those busman mics are absolutely awesome) and I'd like to master the whole montage.

I use to master using Wavelab and a chain of plugins (Waves Q10 EQ, Waves LinMB and Waves S1-Imager, then Waves L2), but that's for audience only.

I've got a simple question. How do you use to master matrix? Do you render AUD+SDB and then master? Do you master AUD and SDB separately?

I'm a bit lost in all together... any help would be appreciatted.

I generally do the matrix in the montage.  render and then do any edits on the matrix copy.  I'm not one to really "master" my shows.  simple fades, raise gain if needed etc is about all I do.

I mix the two recordings together, often using EQ and reverb on the varying sources to get them to blend well in the mix, then do the normal route of mastering using a similar plug-in chain to what you described.

Find the strengths of the two sources and play on them in the mix.  If your SBD is lacking low-end, be sure to bring that out in the AUD source.  If the AUD source is lacking a prominent vocal, try to bring it out in the SBD.

It will be important to manage any phase issues between the 2 sources... Some times a DTS is a better bet than a Matrix...

Remember your point source has one phase and the sbd another it won't be that bad if the mics are on stage or coincident next to the pa stacks...

what software are you using?

i use samplitude to mix down - adjust the balance of the 2 sources and then apply all plugins in post
