Is it possible to make a telephone patch cable?
« on: January 19, 2007, 02:39:50 PM »
Is it possible to make a patch cable that works like this:

ADK A-51s LE's > Oade W-mod UA-5 > Zoom H4n Pro if I bother to drag out a full rig. More often just the H4N Pro. My LMA tapes

Yes.

I used to make these when I was phone-phreaking back in high-school...  Ahhh...  Commodore 64...

Anyways, I'll look around, I think I still ahve some phone-gear...  That should include a 1/8"TRS phone output cable...

Google reveals:

Two wires (normally referred to as a "pair") are needed for most telephone connections.  One of the wires in a pair is referred to as the "tip" and the other is called the "ring".  Color code schemes are used to identify wires within a cable.

You may encounter two different wire color schemes while working on your phone wiring.

The simplest color scheme is used on normal station cable (what your phone tech may call "JK"), which has only two pairs of wire.  The first pair has one green wire ("tip") and one red wire ("ring").  The second pair has one black wire ("tip") and one yellow wire ( "ring").  For a single phone line, only the green and red pair are normally used.  The black and yellow pair is normally spare and available to install a second phone line.

If I remember correctly, attach tip to green and ring to red.  No cutting involved, just clip in with alligators and you'll be good.

I actually have a phone microphone that fit on the old school at&t phone (round ear and mouth piece).  I'll send that to you for free if I can find it...

I think this ought to do it. Don't worry about the REM cable, that's for an old-school cassete deck. I'm pretty sure you can just use the mini cable and not worry about the REM cable, but check with your local rat shack geek. Looks like inflation brought it up to $26 now, heh...

It's been quite a while since I used one... But years ago I had some legal problems with an old roommate trying to screw me over for about $6k.

At least in AZ it is legal to record telephone calls as long as *one* party is aware of it.  I was able to goto RatShack and they had a device that attached to the back of the phone handset (the plastic part) and would send any conversation out to be recorded through an 1/8" jack.  Quality was surprisingly good for a conversation, not sure for music,  and when we went to court he did not know about the recordings and I got punitive damages of about $4k and lawyers fees, missed work, etc.

Do you just need one for a short time? I can lend you a THAT-1 for a few weeks if you don't need to keep it forever.

Is it possible to make a patch cable that works like this:

I don't think you want to split a POTS line cable directly into your recorder line input.  Ring voltage is around 90Vrms.  That suction cup microphone from RS is a safer solution.

The first rule of amateur neurosurgery club is .... I forget.

Thanks for the offer, i dont even need it yet... me and some friends are working on getting a pirate radio station going and once its up i'd like to a weekly or monthly "radio open mic" where people could call in and play a song or read something etc. It will probably be at least a month before we can go on the air.
