Topic: Need a cable built

I was working with 2 different people on making this cable, but nothing seems to be working out.

I need the following built (Ford) tough for stealthing purposes and longevity.

BNC F (stereo) (should be as small as possible and/or right angle)
to
a 4'6" cable (must be thin but sturdy and preferably not black to make stealthing more hidden)
to
straight 1/8" stereo connector (for an R-09)

I believe this should be pretty simple, but with the Schoeps BNC connectors on the pre-amp side, things seem to be tough.

I'm pretty sure Greg is just referencing that this would be an easy job if the pre-amp had a different type of connector for output.  That is all.

Anyways, bump for Greg.  I know we've got some good quality cable makers on the board, but so far, no one's been able to help him.

Sorry for any confusion.

The connector that comes out of the VMS is a standard BNC connector (like the picture shows) and that is the tough part of this cable, as I dont think anything else out there uses the BNC connector any more.

I had a cable that Klay Anderson built for me that died/broke and he cant make them any more, so I am kind of stuck with the resources here (and I dont mean stuck in a bad way) as I dont know where else to turn.

Word Clock sync.  To clarify:  right-angle BNC-male > right-angle BNC-male.  Low res mobile pic attached (can't find my digi cam battery charger).

You sure you want a BNC-female?  I've only ever seen panel-mount BNC-female on gear, while I've always seen BNC-male cables.  Not saying you're not right, just curious as I can't find any specs on the VMS online.

Those look like BNC-female on the VMS.  Looks to me like you need a (2) mono BNC-male > stereo 1/8" cable.  My personal preference would be for a right-angle stereo 1/8", but I've not used the R-09 so don't know if/how that would work.  Definitely give Ed a call or email, I bet he can make it.

Correct, in my head that is what I put in the original post, but good catch, yea, I will need 2 mono going to the 1/8" male connector

My personal preference would be for a right-angle stereo 1/8", but I've not used the R-09 so don't know if/how that would work.  Definitely give Ed a call or email, I bet he can make it.

I have an external -10db pad device that is 1/8" inline, and the right angle connector about 1.5" off the R09 would be a pain to handle

And I use those now, to a radio shack RCA>1/8" cable, and with the converter and RCA plug on the RS cable, it makes the deck about 1.5" longer and that much harder to stealth with

The cable before was nice and compact and also had a -10db pad built in... had I known what kind of gold I had, I would have ordered a dozen of them to have "just in case"

I was the last failure on this cable.
my problems:

1.  BNC connectors. 
I cant' tell you how many I bought and ruined on this cable.  seems there are many different variations of BNC plugs, and they require crimping and not soldering.
I even went out and dumped $60 on a crimper for this (and other) projects.  Still can't get the right freakin' connecters.  I just dont know what i'm doing w/those.

2. opened up the 3.5mm end only to have a bunch of broken resistors fall out.  this was the home-brew attenuator.
my problem here is that i'm not an EE.  so I have no clue as to what values these have, how much attenuation they are providing...etc.
This new problem lead me to buy several books on EE basics so that I could learn how to make this.

3.  time.
I have too many projects, kids, dogs, wives..., leaving much time only for things that I know I can finish once I start.

i'm no cable maker, but if the original connectors are ok, could you splice a new cable into the old?

Do you have the resistors still?  The stripes should tell you what they are... the attenuator should be nothing more than a resistor between hot and ground I believe.

R1 comes out to ~1156
R2 comes out to ~853

Mouser stocks a metal film 1/4 watt 845ohm and 1.15k ohm resistors, so with $.50 worth of parts you should be all set if my latenight calculations are correct.

P/Ns are 271-845 and 271-1.15k respectively

All I can say is you guys rock... I will admit I dont know squatt about the technology I use to record, I just know what gear my ears like, so I am glad someone can help out when we get this technical!
