Title: Looking for mic travel case ideas
Post by: Charlie Miller on October 21, 2017, 09:25:18 PM
My backpack is no longer big enough to carry all my gear needed for the upcoming Phish shows. I have my Schoeps in an old modified jewelry box which is great, but the AKG 460's and CK8's are in large cases. I would love to be able to put all 4 mics and the CK8's in one compact case which will fit in my backpack with the other stuff.

Anyone have ideas or links??

Here's a picture of a bunny with a pancake on his head.

I use the Cigar Caddy for Gefells and Naks:

The cigar caddy works great for AKG mic bodies but I think the CK8's are about 8.5" long and the interior of the cigar caddy is a tad under 8.0".

I use Pelican cases. The 1060 micro case might hold a ck8, its close. I would look at some of their cases...

This is awesome for the 4 mics. Makes things a lot easier. Thanks.

Do you have windscreens for the ck8’s? They would protect them in a pinch. Gonna be tough to find a case that both 8’s will fit in and be compact enough to stuff in your gear bag.

That's a great idea.

I struggled with carrying shotguns for many years. Back in the GD days I used to carry the CP4 caps in their boxes. They were so long the only bag I could use was a back pack. Eventually I found shorter shot guns, but even then using them at shows always presented a challenge. For quite a few years I settled on the AKG CK69 caps. The short tube. These actually fit in a cigar caddy. Only problem with those is they are real hard to find at a good price. Now I’m using the AKG 568’s. I feel they sound better than the CK69’s with either 460 or 480 bodies. Go figure. But I have to use the windscreens to carry them in a bag.

FWIW, depending on the length of your microphone:

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/rz4AAOSwAuZX5OE~/s-l1600.jpg

eBay search for availability and pricing:

It is not waterproof nor crushproof not even airtight (DSatz explained once airtight containers were bad for electronics. Thanks) but better than a soft pouch in a bag.

I use one to carry a Beyerdynamic M160 (ribbon ballhead mic) together with other mics in a Pelican case. The mic's shaft is slipped in a piece of pipe insulation foam to prevent it from moving, etc.

BTW I discovered what a gimbap is...

Take a look at the Apache cases sold at Harbor Freight.  https://www.harborfreight.com/2800-watertight-protective-case-13-34-in-63926.html  But also look through their sale coupons for special sales.  The largest case was only $29.99 recently including a pick foam insert.
