Best preamp for 460's?
« on: July 14, 2003, 09:25:14 AM »
Looking for opinions. I run a UA-5 now, but am thinking about adding a pre in front of it and just using it as an A>D. Maybe an MP-2? a V-2? A Sax? Like I said this is witha pair of 460's. What do you all think?

148/248 or nada?
I don't buy it. :(
I really just wish I could just get the P-mod for my UA-5!

that sounds like a good option, or ps-2 with a mod sbm-1. Excellent results!!!

I ran 391s>B18's>Mod SBM1 with great results.  I did add a pair of transformers to give me a bit more gain to work with, but the results were solid.

Yeah a V3 would be ideal, but it's out for the same reasons as the Oade preamps. $$$$

How do you think a V2 would sound? Same unit essentially, isn't it?

Exactly the same..  definately go with the v2 unless you want the v3 a/d.

personally i've never been fond of the 480/460 > v2 sound.  fwiw i ran 480 > mp-2 for awhile and loved the combo.  with all the used mp-2s for sale these days you can score a pretty darn good deal on them too.

The EAA PSP-2 sounds good w/  480's. I don't see why it would'nt sound good w/ 460's.

Thats actually what sparked the post. We're seeing a butt-load of the MP-2's now, but with them discontinuing it, it may not be long before they are hard (and pricey) to find. I love the 393>MP2 tapes I've heard.

I don't think the MP2 will hold it's value a la the modSBM-1.  There simply isn't any competition to the modSBM-1, hence it holds it's value well.  But the SD MixPre is basically the same as the MP2 with a slightly different feature set, the most notable of which is no M/S.  Not many people doing M/S with the MP2, I've found.  Just my rambling thoughts...can't concentrate at work when I'm leaving for vacation in ~36 hours...

Whats a god price for a used EAA PSP-2?
And are they ever around?
The MP2 is looking promising simply because of supply.

I think 600-650 is about right. IMHO, I think you would be way more happier with the PSP-2. Post some "ISO's" over on the Oade board and just wait it out. You could get lucky............ good luck!

did you get the ua-5 from oade?  if so you might want to consider getting the wmod which would sound pretty nice w/ the 460s.

Speaking of the e.a.a....what's it sound like?  Transformer based?  I wish there was a little more competetion in the pre markets for tapers...our options seem to be either, as you get up there at least, mme, v3, v2, eaa, mp2 and that is about it as far as pre's go.  I guess the oade mod's would be nice, but quite frankly I wasn't impressed at all with the stock pre's.  Another random musing about pre's...I wonder how hard it is to change the pre chip in the mini-me to another one ala grace.  It would be nice to just pay 400-500 bucks for a new pre chip instead of my ultimate plan of buying a v2 or 3 to run in front.  I have got to get a little of the film off the mme and I will be inn business...it sounds fantastic, just I need a little something else to finally satisfy my quest for the best tape possible.

You might want to consider having Jim Williams replace the electronics in your 460 bodies.  IMO the FET, opamp, and cap change is at least as important as preamp choice, possibly more.

480s + psp2 sound really nice.  Transformer warmth very similar to that of the m148.  I loved both behind the 480s I used to own.

Humm I can pick up a mp-2 pretty cheep right now if it's not sold. I'm running 480>warm UA-5 now.

Do you think the mp-2 would give that much difference running it in front of the UA-5?

Stick with the UA-5- I think the MP-2>UA-5 tapes would be too dark sounding, but that's just me.

I like the AKG>wmod UA-5 better than the AKG>MP-2 tapes, YMMV.

Hey there.... I've been running: 463's (Jim Williams mod.) > DMIC-20 for about 5-6 months now and have been loving the results. The mics sounded real nice before but there's so much more there after the mod -- it's really an amazing difference. I'd say it's a more important choice than which pre. The mics glow and the DMIC just add's to it. I've got samples if you're interested.
