Title: Clipping question
Post by: Trey Batson on July 29, 2003, 08:50:46 PM
I understand a peak has "clipped" when it goes above 0.0 db, but what exactly does this mean?  And is it ok not to worry about clips that do not result in any audible static/noise?  (I'm listening on headphones and don't hear problems.)

Anything else I need to know would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance

reaching 0.0 and going over 0.0 are two different things.  you'll definitely hear any overages.  what are you getting this reading from?

I believe a clip is technically 3 consecutive samples at 0dB.  Personally, if I can't hear it, it doesn't bother me.  The V3 seems to clip very gracefully, so I push my levels pretty hot and have a bunch of inaudible clips in my latest recordings (usually percussion hits).

Yeah I also know the difference between reaching and surpassing.  I'm transferring Jason B's u89 > m148 > v3 source for Phish 7/25.

Now I did just happen to hear some static during a short series of clips in the right channel during the Hood coda.

On my transfer it occurs right around the 64-65 minute mark at the end of the Harry Hood jam and you'll start to hear the band singing "you can feel good, good, good about hood."  During one of those deliveries, I hear a little static in the right channel.

I had been listening to the .wav on my HD, but I just checked the DAT and it's definitely there also.

Trey just a note..

I run my UA-5 so I get the "clip" light on the high points, which registers as -3db...

When I listen to these high points while mastering on my Grado SR-60 headphones it will sound "staticy" every once and a while.  However, once I get it on CD and onto my home listening system (HK AV60 amp, NAD CD & Dayton BR-10 monitors) it sounds fine.

So be sure it's not your headphones overloading, not the recording..

Just a FYI from my experience..

After listening to more, I've heard other spots of noise, but not necessarily while the peaks are clipping.  This is making me wonder if it's an issue of me needing to use a cleaning tape for my D8.

Overall, the source clips very frequently but the noise on the tape doesn't always occur during clips.

I run the V3 hot, get clips here and there, but hardly evey notice. Figure a few clips here and there is a small price to pay for a full sounding tape.
