BIG bummer! You either have a fuckload of manual gain changes ahead of you, or a lost show.

Personally, I compress the clapping parts with a hard limiter to a peak level less than where the music peaks, then normalize the whole set. It is a  little tedious to highlight each part but once you get rolling it goes pretty quick.

You can also play around with adjusting the volume on the clapping parts.

Good luck!
Ben

PS: When archiving shows like this I typically archive one raw copy, one edited version at 24/48, and the final 16/44.1 edited version. Makes it easy to go back if necessary.

normalize the whole thing and then compress in between songs, or the other way around, not sure which is better

Waves L2 Ultramaximizer. It'll compress the hell out of the applause, but who cares?
Out of the game … for now?

Compress first, then normalize. You might need to repeat after the first normalization, since when the levels get boosted it is easier to note any claps that you might have missed the first time. Compressing these spots more will allow you to normalize the whole set to a higher level if you wish to do so.

Take care,
Ben

I've always liked CEP hard limiting with a 0ms look ahead time.  Otherwise, the sound tends to pump up and down.

Looking at your wave image there, I'd guess you want to hard limit to -30dB or even less (meaning -35, -40 etc.)

Hard limit the applause segments one at a time, then boost the whole thing once to bring your peaks back to 0dB.  Editing in 32 bit mode might also be a good move -  you're gonna need some serious boost to get the music back - looks like other than the applause, you don't even hit -30dB.

Yes, the Waves Ultramaximizer rocks!  It will sound great for fixing that type of thing.

I didn't actually tape the show...just converting it for a friend.  He did stealth it.  It was a radio show in the Space Needle.  I grabbed the Waves package that Alex linked to but I'm not real sure what to do with it yet...haven't had a chance to play around w/ it yet,.
