Topic: How much gear can I bring into a Phish show?

I've never taped a Phish show, but I requested taper tickets for Miami. If I get them, I have a few questions. Can I bring a 2ru gig bag with DACS Micamp and Mytek 8x192 in addition to an Edirol recorder? Do you get to plug into an AC outlet, or will I need a battery powered rig?

If the answers are "No" and "No", I can borrow my buddy's Sonosax (that I sold him). But I'd love to use my really good stuff.

limits on bag size typically venue dependent.  no AC provided - you'll have to BYO battery power.

depends on voltage and duration primarily. 9v demands typically favor DVD/Laptop auxiliary battery units, others still use SLA batteries (6v is what I've seen the most of) for some pre-amps. The sax likes 12-20 or something like that, so on short order I'd look at either a bunch of "standard 9v" batteries, or if you want to, a laptop auxiliary battery that does 14v (or an adjustable voltage one like a tekkeon if you can marry the right tip to the cable).

Vegas 00 I saw some guy post-show walk out with his home cassette deck. Like plug in power kind. I have no idea how he powered that thing up, but I was in awe he'd brought it in to begin with. Never saw him in the section at all.

Hahaha! My second taping experience was hauling a 1/4" reel machine and 100' of extension cord to a Dead show in '85. I got permission to plug in with one of the follow spots. Now, even if I thought I could find AC I wouldn't do it 'cause it introduces too many variables. Still a fun memory though. )

That sounds like Larry from Aspen - He runs a Nak Old school Portable deck - it is almost the size of a home deck.
 
He's patched out of me a few times in the past.
 
He was able to get it into John Bell in Vail back 03 when they wheren't allowing any recording equipment in.  The only way a few of us got our gear in was through band members of another band.
 
He just walked right in with it strapped to his back (under a poncho)

Doubt it was the same guy, but someone had a home component cassette deck at phish last night. No idea where he got power and he slipped away before I asked him about it.

chris jones has full size rack mount gear and a 30 amp hour 12v with inverter to power it.  weighs way too much!

Sax takes 2 x 9 volt internal batteries.  Or externally 2 x 9 volt (wired in series) or a 16-19 volt battery.  I run a 16-19 volt LION battery.

I have had him patch out of me at some Mule shows last February and at the Mish this summer.  He is friends with deadheaded.  The deck is older then me.

Typical home cassette deck = 15 to 20 watts
2 hours would be dicey
44 watts on the Mwave and heaven knows it's efficiency...

Getting the rig figured out for the Miami shows. My buddy has an R-4Pro w/ 20 gig drive that I'll be using. 4 consecutive nights of taping. What would be the best battery solution? The owners manual says to use alkalines.

I'm not gonna bother with the Sonosax or external converters. The R-4Pro sounds good enough from what I've read.

I'm getting the Manfrotto 1004BAC stand, and probably a cheap stereo bar like the AKG or K&M for now. So I guess I'll need a thread adapter.

Since I'm flying cross country, I may just bring some cheap mics. I can borrow a pair of JW modded SPA MC1. Or even cheaper, I've got an un-modded pair that's never been used. Or I've got a nice pair of JW modded 414 B/ULS, but they're not cheap. Maybe running those in A/B omni on a wider bar would be cool?

I don't know how far the taping section is from the stage at American Airlines Arena, but since it's a big indoor venue, I'm guessing that ORTF or Blumlein might sound too distant. Has anyone heard of Omni-Mid-Side? You sum a forward facing ribbon with an omni condenser. This (cardioid) sum is combined with a side facing ribbon in a M/S matrix. I could do this with my Royer SF-12 and one of the 414's. This setup is typically used for classical music, but who knows?

You'll either want to use an external battery pack or change batteries at setbreak... I certainly never got much more than about 2hr20min on alkalines with my R4.

I just read a different part of the R-4Pro manual where it says you can use Nickel Hydrogen batteries too. I assume that means NIMH. I thought they were called Nickel Metal Hydride. Anyway, I'm surprised this unit doesn't use bigger batteries. I'll look into a battery pack. It would be nice to not have to reboot at "halftime". Thanks for the info.

Okay, I've got the Sonosax and the R-4Pro here. I probably won't have time to build any external battery rigs, so I guess I'll just use a bunch of AA and 9V batteries.

On another note, the friends I was going to meet at the shows may not be able to go now. So I might need hotel money, which means I'm not buying any new mics. And if I have to wing it in Miami with my dick in the wind for a week, it may be best to just bring some cheapo mics.

Oh well, I'd rather save up for those Nevatons anyway.

Hm, claims no longer available, but I use this to power my R-4 ... it runs it like 12+ hours on 2 channels.
